We find that most of the variation in bilateral remittance flows can be explained by a few gravity variables. The evidence on the motives to remit is mixed, but altruism may be less of a factor than commonly believed. Most strikingly, remittances do not seem to increase in the wake of a natural disaster and appear aligned with the business cycle in the home country, suggesting that remittances may not play a major role in limiting vulnerability to shocks. To encourage remittances and maximize their economic impact, policies should be directed at reducing transaction costs, promoting financial sector development, and improving the business climate. 410 0$aIMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;$vNo. 2006/290 606 $aEmigrant remittances$zDeveloping countries$xEconometric models 606 $aCapital movements$zDeveloping countries$xEconometric models 606 $aExports and Imports$2imf 606 $aForeign Exchange$2imf 606 $aNatural Disasters$2imf 606 $aRemittances$2imf 606 $aCurrent Account Adjustment$2imf 606 $aShort-term Capital Movements$2imf 606 $aClimate$2imf 606 $aNatural Disasters and Their Management$2imf 606 $aGlobal Warming$2imf 606 $aInternational economics$2imf 606 $aCurrency$2imf 606 $aForeign exchange$2imf 606 $aNatural disasters$2imf 606 $aMultiple currency practices$2imf 606 $aCurrent account$2imf 606 $aOutward remittances$2imf 606 $aInternational finance$2imf 606 $aBalance of payments$2imf 606 $aEmigrant remittances$2imf 607 $aBangladesh$2imf 615 0$aEmigrant remittances$xEconometric models. 615 0$aCapital movements$xEconometric models. 615 7$aExports and Imports 615 7$aForeign Exchange 615 7$aNatural Disasters 615 7$aRemittances 615 7$aCurrent Account Adjustment 615 7$aShort-term Capital Movements 615 7$aClimate 615 7$aNatural Disasters and Their Management 615 7$aGlobal Warming 615 7$aInternational economics 615 7$aCurrency 615 7$aForeign exchange 615 7$aNatural disasters 615 7$aMultiple currency practices 615 7$aCurrent account 615 7$aOutward remittances 615 7$aInternational finance 615 7$aBalance of payments 615 7$aEmigrant remittances 700 $aLueth$b Erik$01546545 701 $aRuiz-Arranz$b Marta$01485163 712 02$aInternational Monetary Fund.$bAsia and Pacific Dept. 801 0$bDcWaIMF 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910788409803321 996 $aA Gravity Model of Workers?
