CONCLUSION""; ""REFERENCES"" 330 3 $aWe analyze the relationship between international trade and the quality of economic institutions, such as contract enforcement, rule of law, and property rights. In our model, firms differ in their preferences for institutional quality, which is determined endogenously in a political economy framework. We show that trade opening can worsen institutions when it increases the political power of a small elite of large exporters who prefer to maintain bad institutions. The detrimental effect of trade on institutions is most likely to occur when a small country captures a sufficiently large share of world exports in sectors characterized by economic profits. 410 0$aIMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;$vNo. 2006/056 606 $aInternational trade 606 $aIncome distribution 606 $aEquality 606 $aInvestments: Commodities$2imf 606 $aExports and Imports$2imf 606 $aFinance: General$2imf 606 $aMacroeconomics$2imf 606 $aPolitical Economy$2imf 606 $aAgriculture: General$2imf 606 $aTrade: General$2imf 606 $aGeneral Financial Markets: General (includes Measurement and Data)$2imf 606 $aLabor Economics: General$2imf 606 $aInvestment & securities$2imf 606 $aInternational economics$2imf 606 $aFinance$2imf 606 $aPolitical economy$2imf 606 $aLabour$2imf 606 $aincome economics$2imf 606 $aAgricultural commodities$2imf 606 $aExports$2imf 606 $aCompetition$2imf 606 $aLabor$2imf 606 $aFarm produce$2imf 606 $aEconomics$2imf 606 $aLabor economics$2imf 607 $aUnited States$2imf 615 0$aInternational trade. 615 0$aIncome distribution. 615 0$aEquality. 615 7$aInvestments: Commodities 615 7$aExports and Imports 615 7$aFinance: General 615 7$aMacroeconomics 615 7$aPolitical Economy 615 7$aAgriculture: General 615 7$aTrade: General 615 7$aGeneral Financial Markets: General (includes Measurement and Data) 615 7$aLabor Economics: General 615 7$aInvestment & securities 615 7$aInternational economics 615 7$aFinance 615 7$aPolitical economy 615 7$aLabour 615 7$aincome economics 615 7$aAgricultural commodities 615 7$aExports 615 7$aCompetition 615 7$aLabor 615 7$aFarm produce 615 7$aEconomics 615 7$aLabor economics 700 $aLevchenko$b Andrei$01143204 701 $aÐo$b Quý Toàn$01546541 801 0$bDcWaIMF 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910788408803321 996 $aTrade, Inequality, and the Political Economy of Institutions$93802224 997 $aUNINA
