CONCLUDING REMARKS""; ""REFERENCES"" 330 3 $aNatural disasters can put severe strain on public finances, in particular in developing and small countries. But catastrophe insurance markets increasingly offer opportunities for the transfer of such risks. Thus far, developing countries have only tepidly begun to tap these opportunities. More frequent and intensive use of insurance markets may be desirable because it could help introduce an important element of predictability in the post-disaster public finances of disaster-prone developing countries. Against this background, the paper surveys the various available insurance modalities and reviews recent initiatives in developing and emerging market countries. It also identifies some key challenges for the insurance community, donors, and international financial institutions (IFIs). 410 0$aIMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;$vNo. 2006/199 606 $aFinance, Public 606 $aNatural disasters$xEconomic aspects 606 $aFinance: General$2imf 606 $aInsurance$2imf 606 $aInvestments: Bonds$2imf 606 $aIndustries: Financial Services$2imf 606 $aNatural Disasters$2imf 606 $aInternational Financial Markets$2imf 606 $aInsurance Companies$2imf 606 $aActuarial Studies$2imf 606 $aFiscal Policies and Behavior of Economic Agents: General$2imf 606 $aPublic Goods$2imf 606 $aEconomic Development: General$2imf 606 $aClimate$2imf 606 $aNatural Disasters and Their Management$2imf 606 $aGlobal Warming$2imf 606 $aPension Funds$2imf 606 $aNon-bank Financial Institutions$2imf 606 $aFinancial Instruments$2imf 606 $aInstitutional Investors$2imf 606 $aGeneral Financial Markets: General (includes Measurement and Data)$2imf 606 $aInsurance & actuarial studies$2imf 606 $aFinance$2imf 606 $aNatural disasters$2imf 606 $aInvestment & securities$2imf 606 $aInsurance companies$2imf 606 $aBonds$2imf 606 $aInternational capital markets$2imf 606 $aFinancial institutions$2imf 606 $aEnvironment$2imf 606 $aFinancial markets$2imf 606 $aCapital market$2imf 607 $aTaiwan Province of China$2imf 615 0$aFinance, Public. 615 0$aNatural disasters$xEconomic aspects. 615 7$aFinance: General 615 7$aInsurance 615 7$aInvestments: Bonds 615 7$aIndustries: Financial Services 615 7$aNatural Disasters 615 7$aInternational Financial Markets 615 7$aInsurance Companies 615 7$aActuarial Studies 615 7$aFiscal Policies and Behavior of Economic Agents: General 615 7$aPublic Goods 615 7$aEconomic Development: General 615 7$aClimate 615 7$aNatural Disasters and Their Management 615 7$aGlobal Warming 615 7$aPension Funds 615 7$aNon-bank Financial Institutions 615 7$aFinancial Instruments 615 7$aInstitutional Investors 615 7$aGeneral Financial Markets: General (includes Measurement and Data) 615 7$aInsurance & actuarial studies 615 7$aFinance 615 7$aNatural disasters 615 7$aInvestment & securities 615 7$aInsurance companies 615 7$aBonds 615 7$aInternational capital markets 615 7$aFinancial institutions 615 7$aEnvironment 615 7$aFinancial markets 615 7$aCapital market 700 $aHofman$b David$01472686 701 $aBrukoff$b Patricia$01574015 712 02$aInternational Monetary Fund.$bPolicy Development and Review Dept. 801 0$bDcWaIMF 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910788404103321 996 $aInsuring Public Finances Against Natural Disasters$93850012 997 $aUNINA
