Description of the Database; References 330 3 $aAlthough the economic growth literature has come a long way since the Solow-Swan model of the fifties, there is still considerable debate on the "real' or "deep" determinants of growth. This paper revisits the question of what is really important for strong long-term growth by using a Binary Classification Tree approach, a nonparametric statistical technique that is not commonly used in the growth literature. A key strength of the method is that it recognizes that a combination of conditions can be instrumental in leading to a particular outcome, in this case strong growth. The paper finds that strong growth is a result of a complex set of interacting factors, rather than a particular set of variables such as institutions or geography, as is often cited in the literature. In particular, geographical luck and a favorable external environment, combined with trade openness and strong human capital are conducive to growth. 410 0$aIMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;$vNo. 2008/263 606 $aEconomic development$vCross-cultural studies 606 $aEconomic development$xRegional disparities 606 $aExports and Imports$2imf 606 $aLabor$2imf 606 $aDemography$2imf 606 $aDemographic Economics: General$2imf 606 $aEmpirical Studies of Trade$2imf 606 $aHealth: General$2imf 606 $aHuman Capital$2imf 606 $aSkills$2imf 606 $aOccupational Choice$2imf 606 $aLabor Productivity$2imf 606 $aEducation: General$2imf 606 $aPopulation & demography$2imf 606 $aInternational economics$2imf 606 $aHealth economics$2imf 606 $aLabour$2imf 606 $aincome economics$2imf 606 $aEducation$2imf 606 $aPopulation and demographics$2imf 606 $aTerms of trade$2imf 606 $aHealth$2imf 606 $aHuman capital$2imf 606 $aPopulation$2imf 606 $aEconomic policy$2imf 606 $anternational cooperation$2imf 607 $aUnited States$2imf 615 0$aEconomic development 615 0$aEconomic development$xRegional disparities. 615 7$aExports and Imports 615 7$aLabor 615 7$aDemography 615 7$aDemographic Economics: General 615 7$aEmpirical Studies of Trade 615 7$aHealth: General 615 7$aHuman Capital 615 7$aSkills 615 7$aOccupational Choice 615 7$aLabor Productivity 615 7$aEducation: General 615 7$aPopulation & demography 615 7$aInternational economics 615 7$aHealth economics 615 7$aLabour 615 7$aincome economics 615 7$aEducation 615 7$aPopulation and demographics 615 7$aTerms of trade 615 7$aHealth 615 7$aHuman capital 615 7$aPopulation 615 7$aEconomic policy 615 7$anternational cooperation 676 $a338.9 700 $aDuttagupta$b Rupa$01462085 701 $aMlachila$b Montfort$01493464 801 0$bDcWaIMF 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910788341203321 996 $aWhat is Really Good for Long-Term Growth?
