Calibrating Labor Market Search Frictions for European Countries Using a Search Model 330 3 $aAn influential strand of recent research has claimed that large governments in European countries explain their weaker long-term economic performance compared to the U.S. On the other hand, despite these alleged costs, large governments have been popular with electorates. This paper seeks to shed light on this apparent inconsistency; it confirms an adverse effect of taxes on labor supply, but also finds evidence of efficiency-increasing government intervention. However, and especially in the core "Rhineland-model" European countries, actual government policies often depart from such efficient interventions, pointing to the possibility that voters prefer redistribution even at the cost of allocational efficiency. 410 0$aIMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;$vNo. 2009/092 606 $aEconomic development$xPolitical aspects 606 $aEconomic stabilization$xEconometric models 606 $aLabor$2imf 606 $aMacroeconomics$2imf 606 $aTaxation$2imf 606 $aFiscal Policy$2imf 606 $aDemand and Supply of Labor: General$2imf 606 $aLabor Economics: General$2imf 606 $aTaxation, Subsidies, and Revenue: General$2imf 606 $aLabor Economics Policies$2imf 606 $aLabour$2imf 606 $aincome economics$2imf 606 $aPublic finance & taxation$2imf 606 $aLabor supply$2imf 606 $aLabor markets$2imf 606 $aMarginal effective tax rate$2imf 606 $aLabor market policy$2imf 606 $aTax policy$2imf 606 $aLabor market$2imf 606 $aLabor economics$2imf 606 $aTax administration and procedure$2imf 606 $aManpower policy$2imf 607 $aUnited States$2imf 615 0$aEconomic development$xPolitical aspects. 615 0$aEconomic stabilization$xEconometric models. 615 7$aLabor 615 7$aMacroeconomics 615 7$aTaxation 615 7$aFiscal Policy 615 7$aDemand and Supply of Labor: General 615 7$aLabor Economics: General 615 7$aTaxation, Subsidies, and Revenue: General 615 7$aLabor Economics Policies 615 7$aLabour 615 7$aincome economics 615 7$aPublic finance & taxation 615 7$aLabor supply 615 7$aLabor markets 615 7$aMarginal effective tax rate 615 7$aLabor market policy 615 7$aTax policy 615 7$aLabor market 615 7$aLabor economics 615 7$aTax administration and procedure 615 7$aManpower policy 700 $aBell$b Gerwin$01472710 701 $aTawara$b Norikazu$01472711 801 0$bDcWaIMF 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910788337103321 996 $aThe Size of Government and U.S.-European Differences in Economic Performance$93685576 997 $aUNINA
