During the period leading to the current global turmoil, the region has also experienced continuous exchange rate appreciation and rapid FDI inflows, both likely to have affected these countries' competitiveness. This paper describes how the determinants of exports and imports have evolved in CEE countries over 2002-07 and econometrically derives their contribution to trade, with a view to assessing competitiveness developments. The analysis reveals that the global and domestic upswings, along with rising trade market shares, go a long way toward accounting for trade developments in CEE countries until 2007, pointing to continuous nonprice competitiveness gains. It also finds that exchange rate appreciation did not unduly weigh on export and import growth, suggesting that most of it reflected an upward movement in its equilibrium value. While the region entered the current period of global slowdown from a strong competitiveness position, the crisis also exposed the vulnerability of its heavy reliance on global demand to a trade shock. 410 0$aIMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;$vNo. 2009/121 606 $aFinance$zEuropean Union countries 606 $aCompetition, International 606 $aExports and Imports$2imf 606 $aFinance: General$2imf 606 $aTrade: General$2imf 606 $aGeneral Financial Markets: General (includes Measurement and Data)$2imf 606 $aEmpirical Studies of Trade$2imf 606 $aInternational Investment$2imf 606 $aLong-term Capital Movements$2imf 606 $aInternational economics$2imf 606 $aFinance$2imf 606 $aExports$2imf 606 $aCompetition$2imf 606 $aImports$2imf 606 $aTrade balance$2imf 606 $aForeign direct investment$2imf 606 $aBalance of trade$2imf 606 $aInvestments, Foreign$2imf 607 $aCzech Republic$2imf 615 0$aFinance 615 0$aCompetition, International. 615 7$aExports and Imports 615 7$aFinance: General 615 7$aTrade: General 615 7$aGeneral Financial Markets: General (includes Measurement and Data) 615 7$aEmpirical Studies of Trade 615 7$aInternational Investment 615 7$aLong-term Capital Movements 615 7$aInternational economics 615 7$aFinance 615 7$aExports 615 7$aCompetition 615 7$aImports 615 7$aTrade balance 615 7$aForeign direct investment 615 7$aBalance of trade 615 7$aInvestments, Foreign 700 $aAllard$b Céline$01472678 801 0$bDcWaIMF 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910788334203321 996 $aCompetitiveness in Central-Europe$93685547 997 $aUNINA
