We find that regional disparities in the levels of GDP per capita, labor productivity, and labor utilization have widened since 2000, coinciding with the time that Slovakia initiated negotiations on EU accession. Notwithstanding ?-divergence in the levels, there was conditional ?-convergence in the growth rates of GDP per capita and labor productivity. Improvements in total factor productivity were the main engine of growth of GDP in all regions. Sustaining growth and reducing disparities will require increasing the labor utilization ratio and improving the structural and policy determinants of productivity in the eastern regions. The main policy priorities are to improve transportation infrastructure, enhance cost competitiveness through greater regional differentiation in wages and further decentralization of collective bargaining, and increase accumulation of human capital. 410 0$aIMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;$vNo. 2009/145 606 $aLabor$2imf 606 $aMacroeconomics$2imf 606 $aProduction and Operations Management$2imf 606 $aMacroeconomics: Production$2imf 606 $aHuman Capital$2imf 606 $aSkills$2imf 606 $aOccupational Choice$2imf 606 $aLabor Productivity$2imf 606 $aLabor Economics Policies$2imf 606 $aProduction$2imf 606 $aCost$2imf 606 $aCapital and Total Factor Productivity$2imf 606 $aCapacity$2imf 606 $aLabor Economics: General$2imf 606 $aLabour$2imf 606 $aincome economics$2imf 606 $aProductivity$2imf 606 $aLabor productivity$2imf 606 $aLabor policy$2imf 606 $aTotal factor productivity$2imf 606 $aIndustrial productivity$2imf 606 $aLabor economics$2imf 607 $aSlovakia$xEconomic policy 607 $aSlovakia$xEconomic conditions 607 $aSlovak Republic$2imf 615 7$aLabor 615 7$aMacroeconomics 615 7$aProduction and Operations Management 615 7$aMacroeconomics: Production 615 7$aHuman Capital 615 7$aSkills 615 7$aOccupational Choice 615 7$aLabor Productivity 615 7$aLabor Economics Policies 615 7$aProduction 615 7$aCost 615 7$aCapital and Total Factor Productivity 615 7$aCapacity 615 7$aLabor Economics: General 615 7$aLabour 615 7$aincome economics 615 7$aProductivity 615 7$aLabor productivity 615 7$aLabor policy 615 7$aTotal factor productivity 615 7$aIndustrial productivity 615 7$aLabor economics 700 $aJarmuzek$b Mariusz$01472657 701 $aBanerjee$b Biswajit$01472658 712 02$aInternational Monetary Fund.$bEuropean Dept. 801 0$bDcWaIMF 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910788331503321 996 $aAnatomy of Regional Disparities in the Slovak Republic$93685520 997 $aUNINA
