This neglects the fact that multinational enterprises continue to invest domestically while undertaking foreign expansion. This paper compares investments at home and abroad. Our firm-level dataset shows an important home bias in productive investments. Part of this "excessive" domestic investment is explained by standard determinants of location choices. The interdependence between affiliates of the same industrial group however accounts for the lion's share of the home bias. Moreover, French firms' propensity to invest abroad is positively related to their productivity and the size of their intangible assets. 410 0$aIMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;$vNo. 2010/022 606 $aInvestments, Foreign 606 $aInvestments 606 $aCorporate Finance$2imf 606 $aEconometrics$2imf 606 $aExports and Imports$2imf 606 $aLabor$2imf 606 $aProduction and Operations Management$2imf 606 $aModels of Trade with Imperfect Competition and Scale Economies$2imf 606 $aEconomic Integration$2imf 606 $aInternational Investment$2imf 606 $aLong-term Capital Movements$2imf 606 $aMultinational Firms$2imf 606 $aInternational Business$2imf 606 $aMacroeconomics: Production$2imf 606 $aDiscrete Regression and Qualitative Choice Models$2imf 606 $aDiscrete Regressors$2imf 606 $aProportions$2imf 606 $aEmployment$2imf 606 $aUnemployment$2imf 606 $aWages$2imf 606 $aIntergenerational Income Distribution$2imf 606 $aAggregate Human Capital$2imf 606 $aAggregate Labor Productivity$2imf 606 $aFinance$2imf 606 $aMultinationals$2imf 606 $aMacroeconomics$2imf 606 $aEconometrics & economic statistics$2imf 606 $aLabour$2imf 606 $aincome economics$2imf 606 $aForeign direct investment$2imf 606 $aTransnational corporations$2imf 606 $aProductivity$2imf 606 $aLogit models$2imf 606 $aBalance of payments$2imf 606 $aEconomic sectors$2imf 606 $aProduction$2imf 606 $aEconometric analysis$2imf 606 $aInvestments, Foreign$2imf 606 $aInternational business enterprises$2imf 606 $aIndustrial productivity$2imf 606 $aEconometric models$2imf 606 $aEconomic theory$2imf 607 $aFrance$2imf 615 0$aInvestments, Foreign. 615 0$aInvestments. 615 7$aCorporate Finance 615 7$aEconometrics 615 7$aExports and Imports 615 7$aLabor 615 7$aProduction and Operations Management 615 7$aModels of Trade with Imperfect Competition and Scale Economies 615 7$aEconomic Integration 615 7$aInternational Investment 615 7$aLong-term Capital Movements 615 7$aMultinational Firms 615 7$aInternational Business 615 7$aMacroeconomics: Production 615 7$aDiscrete Regression and Qualitative Choice Models 615 7$aDiscrete Regressors 615 7$aProportions 615 7$aEmployment 615 7$aUnemployment 615 7$aWages 615 7$aIntergenerational Income Distribution 615 7$aAggregate Human Capital 615 7$aAggregate Labor Productivity 615 7$aFinance 615 7$aMultinationals 615 7$aMacroeconomics 615 7$aEconometrics & economic statistics 615 7$aLabour 615 7$aincome economics 615 7$aForeign direct investment 615 7$aTransnational corporations 615 7$aProductivity 615 7$aLogit models 615 7$aBalance of payments 615 7$aEconomic sectors 615 7$aProduction 615 7$aEconometric analysis 615 7$aInvestments, Foreign 615 7$aInternational business enterprises 615 7$aIndustrial productivity 615 7$aEconometric models 615 7$aEconomic theory 700 $aMejean$b Isabelle$01509557 701 $aMayer$b Thierry$0300994 701 $aNefussi$b Benjamin$01509558 712 02$aInternational Monetary Fund. 801 0$bDcWaIMF 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910788221703321 996 $aThe Location of Domestic and Foreign Production Affiliates by French Multinational Firms$93741521 997 $aUNINA
