Based on extensive study of written and visual sources dating from the ancient to the early modern period, the author re-integrates the history of pre-modern Europe into the study of nationalism, describing it as an unintended and unavoidable consequence of the legacy of Roman imperialism in the Middle Ages. Hirschi identifies the earliest nationalists among Renaissance humanists, exploring their public roles and ambitions to offer new insight into the history of political scholarship in Europe and arguing that their adoption of ancient role models produced massive contradictions between their self-image and political function. This book demonstrates that only through understanding the development of the politics, scholarship and art of pre-modern Europe can we fully grasp the global power of nationalism in a modern political context. 606 $aNationalism$xHistory 606 $aNationalism$zEurope$xHistory 606 $aNationalism$xPhilosophy 615 0$aNationalism$xHistory. 615 0$aNationalism$xHistory. 615 0$aNationalism$xPhilosophy. 676 $a320.5409 700 $aHirschi$b Caspar$0847007 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910457215103321 996 $aThe origins of nationalism$91892152 997 $aUNINA LEADER 04269nam 2200637 450 001 9910788146303321 005 20190923182604.0 010 $a1-4422-4703-7 010 $a1-4422-4704-5 035 $a(CKB)2670000000602687 035 $a(EBL)1996184 035 $a(SSID)ssj0001458600 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11790247 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0001458600 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)11469338 035 $a(PQKB)11754179 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC1996184 035 $a(PPN)185341268 035 $a(EXLCZ)992670000000602687 100 $a20150211h20152015 uy| 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 00$aEnhancing teaching and learning in the 21st-century academic library $esuccessful innovations that make a difference /$fedited by Bradford Lee Eden 210 1$aLanham :$cRowman & Littlefield,$d[2015] 210 4$dİ2015 215 $a1 online resource (228 pages) 225 0 $aCreating the 21st-century academic library ;$v2 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record. 311 $a1-336-21624-7 311 $a1-4422-4705-3 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $aOpen access for student success / Teri Oaks Gallaway and James B.
