In this book, Jonathan Sheehan shows how Protestant translators and scholars in the eighteenth century transformed the Bible from a book justified by theology to one justified by culture. In doing so, the Bible was made into the cornerstone of Western heritage and invested with meaning, authority, and significance even for a secular age. The Enlightenment Bible offers a new history of the Bible in the century of its greatest crisis and, in turn, a new vision of this century and its effects on religion. Although the Enlightenment has long symbolized the corrosive effects of modernity on religion, Sheehan shows how the Bible survived, and even thrived in this cradle of ostensible secularization. Indeed, in eighteenth-century Protestant Europe, biblical scholarship and translation became more vigorous and culturally significant than at any time since the Reformation. From across the theological spectrum, European scholars--especially German and English--exerted tremendous energies to rejuvenate the Bible, reinterpret its meaning, and reinvest it with new authority. Poets, pedagogues, philosophers, literary critics, philologists, and historians together built a post-theological Bible, a monument for a new religious era. These literati forged the Bible into a cultural text, transforming the theological core of the Judeo-Christian tradition. In the end, the Enlightenment gave the Bible the power to endure the corrosive effects of modernity, not as a theological text but as the foundation of Western culture. 410 0$aPrinceton paperbacks. 410 0$aACLS Fellows? publications. 606 $aEnlightenment 610 $aA Tale of a Tub. 610 $aAllan Bloom. 610 $aAnthony Collins. 610 $aApocrypha. 610 $aApologetics. 610 $aAthanasius Kircher. 610 $aAugust Hermann Francke. 610 $aBible. 610 $aBiblical authority. 610 $aBiblical canon. 610 $aBiblical criticism. 610 $aBiblical inerrancy. 610 $aBiblical paraphrase. 610 $aBook of Job. 610 $aCatechism. 610 $aChristian Thomasius. 610 $aChristianity and Judaism. 610 $aChristianity. 610 $aChurch Fathers. 610 $aClement of Alexandria. 610 $aCriticism. 610 $aDavid Strauss. 610 $aDeism. 610 $aDictionnaire Historique et Critique. 610 $aDogma. 610 $aDogmatic theology. 610 $aDonatism. 610 $aEdward Stillingfleet. 610 $aEpistle to the Hebrews. 610 $aErudition. 610 $aExegesis. 610 $aFrancis Atterbury. 610 $aFranz Rosenzweig. 610 $aFriedrich August Wolf. 610 $aFriedrich Nicolai. 610 $aFriedrich Schleiermacher. 610 $aGeneva Bible. 610 $aGod. 610 $aHebrews. 610 $aHeresy. 610 $aHeterodoxy. 610 $aInfidel. 610 $aJews. 610 $aJohann David Michaelis. 610 $aJohann Georg Hamann. 610 $aJohann Gerhard. 610 $aJohann Jakob Griesbach. 610 $aJohn Foxe. 610 $aJohn Toland. 610 $aJudaism. 610 $aJustification (theology). 610 $aKarl Barth. 610 $aKarl Friedrich Bahrdt. 610 $aKarl Lachmann. 610 $aLiterature. 610 $aLoci Theologici. 610 $aLuther Bible. 610 $aLutheranism. 610 $aMasoretic Text. 610 $aMatthew Tindal. 610 $aMennonite. 610 $aMethodism. 610 $aNew Testament. 610 $aNonconformist. 610 $aOld Christian. 610 $aOld Testament. 610 $aOn Religion. 610 $aParticiple. 610 $aPhilology. 610 $aPierre Bayle. 610 $aPietism. 610 $aPoetry. 610 $aProtestant Reformers. 610 $aProtestantism. 610 $aPsalm 1. 610 $aPsalms. 610 $aPuritans. 610 $aRadical Pietism. 610 $aReform Judaism. 610 $aReligion. 610 $aReligious text. 610 $aRichard Popkin. 610 $aRobert Estienne. 610 $aRomanticism. 610 $aRosicrucianism. 610 $aScholasticism. 610 $aSecularism. 610 $aSecularization. 610 $aSirach. 610 $aSola fide. 610 $aSpirituality. 610 $aStephen Greenblatt. 610 $aSturm und Drang. 610 $aThe Kingdom of God Is Within You. 610 $aThe Philosopher. 610 $aTheology. 610 $aThomas Chubb. 610 $aWilhelm Dilthey. 610 $aWilliam Tyndale. 610 $aWilliam Whiston. 615 0$aEnlightenment. 676 $a220/.09/033 686 $a11.32$2bcl 700 $aSheehan$b Jonathan$f1969-$01021169 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910787675603321 996 $aThe Enlightenment Bible$93866154 997 $aUNINA
