Anthropologist Marina Welker draws on two years of research at Newmont Mining Corporation's Denver headquarters and its Batu Hijau copper and gold mine in Sumbawa, Indonesia, to address these questions. Against the backdrop of an emerging Corporate Social Responsibility movement and changing state dynamics in Indonesia, she shows how people enact the mining corporation in multiple ways: as an ore producer, employer, patron, promoter of sustainable development, religious sponsor, auditable organization, foreign imperialist, and environmental threat. Rather than assuming that corporations are monolithic, profit-maximizing subjects, Welker turns to anthropological theories of personhood to develop an analytic model of the corporation as an unstable collective subject with multiple authors, boundaries, and interests. Enacting the Corporation demonstrates that corporations are constituted through continuous struggles over relations with-and responsibilities to-local communities, workers, activists, governments, contractors, and shareholders. 606 $aMineral industries$xSocial aspects$zIndonesia$zSumbawa Island 606 $aSocial responsibility of business$zIndonesia$zSumbawa Island 606 $aSocial responsibility of business$zColorado$zGreenwood Village 610 $aactivists. 610 $aanthropology. 610 $abatu hijau. 610 $abig business. 610 $abusiness ethics. 610 $abusiness. 610 $acollective subject. 610 $acopper mines. 610 $acorporate social responsibility movement. 610 $acorporations. 610 $adenver. 610 $aemployer. 610 $aenvironmental threat. 610 $agold mines. 610 $agovernment and governing. 610 $aimperialism. 610 $aimperialist. 610 $aindonesia. 610 $alocal communities. 610 $aminers. 610 $amining. 610 $amoney and power. 610 $anatural resource extraction industry. 610 $anewmont mining corporation. 610 $aore producer. 610 $apatron. 610 $apersonhood. 610 $areligious sponsor. 610 $ashareholders. 610 $asumbawa. 610 $asustainable development. 610 $aworkers. 615 0$aMineral industries$xSocial aspects 615 0$aSocial responsibility of business 615 0$aSocial responsibility of business 676 $a338.8/872209598 700 $aWelker$b Marina$f1973-$01498426 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910787605803321 996 $aEnacting the corporation$93723985 997 $aUNINA
