The author argues that three factors limited the impact of eugenics in Portugal: a low level of institutionalization, opposition from Catholics and the conservative nature of the Salazar regime. In Portugal the eugenic science and movement were confined to three expressions: individualized studies on mental health, often from a 'biotypological' perspective; a particular stance on racial miscegenation in the context of the substantial Portuguese colonial empire; and a diffuse model of social hygiene, maternity care and puericulture. 410 0$aCEU Press studies in the history of medicine ;$vVolume 5. 606 $aEugenics$zPortugal$xHistory 606 $aSocial justice$zPortugal$xHistory 607 $aPortugal$xRace relations$xHistory 610 $aCatholic Church, Early 20th century, Eugenics, Portugal, Racial studies, Racism, Social justice. 615 0$aEugenics$xHistory. 615 0$aSocial justice$xHistory. 676 $a363.9/209469 700 $aCleminson$b Richard$0902351 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910787123203321 996 $aCatholicism, race and empire$93790859 997 $aUNINA
