Within a broad-ranging examination of Japan's "semi-democratic" political system from 1918 to 1932, when political parties tended to dominate the government, the book analyzes in detail why this system collapsed in 1932 and discusses the implications of the failure. By reference to comparable cases?prewar Argentina, prewar Germany, postwar Brazil, and 1980's Thailand?Harukata Takenaka reveals that the factors responsible for the breakdown of the Taisho democracy in Japan replicated those that precipitated the collapse of democracy in Europe, Latin America, and elsewhere in Asia. While most literature on these transitions focuses on successful cases, Takenaka explores democratic failure to answer questions about how and why political parties and their leaders can behave in ways that undermine the democratic institutions that serve as the basis for their formal authority. 410 0$aStudies of the Walter H. Harding, have suggested a unified history or theory of the avant-garde. His book examines the diversity and plurality of avant-garde gestures and expressions to suggest "avant-garde pluralities" and how an appreciation of these pluralities enables a more dynamic and increasingly global understanding of vanguardism in the performing arts. In pursuing this goal, the book not only surveys a wide variety of canonical and noncanonical examples of avant-garde performance, but also develops a range of theoretical paradigms that defend the haunting cultural and political significance of avant-garde expressions beyond what critics have presumed to be the death of the avant-garde. The Ghosts of the Avant-Garde(s) offers a strikingly new perspective not only on key controversies and debates within avant-garde studies but also on contemporary forms of avant-garde expression within a global political economy"--$cProvided by publisher. 606 $aExperimental theater$xHistory and criticism 606 $aExperimental drama$xHistory and criticism 615 0$aExperimental theater$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aExperimental drama$xHistory and criticism. 676 $a792.02/23 686 $aPER011020$aART015100$2bisacsh 700 $aHarding$b James Martin$f1958-$01640325 712 02$aMichigan Publishing (University of Michigan) 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910809324903321 996 $aThe ghosts of the avant-garde(s)$93983807 997 $aUNINA
