From its modest beginnings of seven sites, the UC NRS has grown to encompass more than 750,000 wildland acres. This book tells the story of how a few forward-thinking UC faculty, who'd had their research plots and teaching spots destroyed by development and habitat degradation, devised a way to save representative examples of many of California's major ecosystems. Working together with conservation-minded donors and landowners, with state and federal agencies, and with land trusts and private conservation organizations, they founded what would become the world's largest university-administered natural reserve system-a legacy of lasting significance and utility. This lavishly illustrated volume, which includes images by famed photographers Ansel Adams and Galen Rowell, describes the natural and human histories of the system's many reserves. Located throughout California, these wildland habitats range from coastal tide pools to inland deserts, from lush wetlands to ancient forests, and from vernal pools to oak savannas. By supporting teaching, research, and public service within such protected landscapes, the UC NRS contributes to the understanding and wise stewardship of the Earth. 606 $aNatural areas$zCalifornia 606 $aEnvironmental protection$zCalifornia 606 $aEcology$xStudy and teaching$zCalifornia 606 $aNatural history$xStudy and teaching$zCalifornia 610 $a20th century. 610 $acalifornia ecosystems. 610 $acalifornia. 610 $acoastal regions. 610 $aconservation. 610 $aconservationists. 610 $aearth sciences. 610 $aenvironmental impacts. 610 $aenvironmental movement. 610 $aenvironmentalism. 610 $aenvironmentalists. 610 $afield research. 610 $aforests. 610 $ahuman history. 610 $aillustrated. 610 $ainland deserts. 610 $aland stewardship. 610 $anatural environments. 610 $anatural history. 610 $anatural reserves. 610 $anatural resources. 610 $aprotected landscapes. 610 $aresource management. 610 $ascientists. 610 $atide pools. 610 $auc faculty. 610 $auc natural reserve system. 610 $awetlands. 610 $awildland habitats. 615 0$aNatural areas 615 0$aEnvironmental protection 615 0$aEcology$xStudy and teaching 615 0$aNatural history$xStudy and teaching 676 $a333.73/1609794 701 $aFiedler$b Peggy Lee$01525266 701 $aRumsey$b Susan Gee$01525267 701 $aWong$b Kathleen M$g(Kathleen Michelle)$01525268 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910786346803321 996 $aThe environmental legacy of the UC natural reserve system$93766536 997 $aUNINA
