After the breakdown of this previously prospering area of psychopharmacology, and in the wake of clashes between counterculture and establishment in the late 1960's, a new generation of hallucinogen researchers used the hype around the neurosciences in the 1990's to bring psychedelics back into the mainstream of science and society. This book is based on anthropological fieldwork and philosophical reflections on life and work in two laboratories that have played key roles in this development: a human lab in Switzerland and an animal lab in California. It sheds light on the central transnational axis of the resurgence connecting American psychedelic culture with the home country of LSD. In the borderland of science and religion, Neuropsychedelia explores the tensions between the use of hallucinogens to model psychoses and to evoke spiritual experiences in laboratory settings. Its protagonists, including the anthropologist himself, struggle to find a place for the mystical under conditions of late-modern materialism. 606 $aHallucinogenic drugs -- Research 606 $aHallucinogenic drugs and religious experience 606 $aNeuropsychopharmacology 606 $aHallucinogenic drugs$xResearch 606 $aNeuropsychopharmacology 606 $aHallucinogenic drugs and religious experience 606 $aScience 606 $aPsychiatric Somatic Therapies 606 $aReligious Philosophies 606 $aPharmacology 606 $aBehavioral Sciences 606 $aPsychotropic Drugs 606 $aModels, Theoretical 606 $aCentral Nervous System Agents 606 $aPhysiological Effects of Drugs 606 $aBehavioral Disciplines and Activities 606 $aBiological Science Disciplines 606 $aNatural Science Disciplines 606 $aInvestigative Techniques 606 $aTherapeutic Uses 606 $aHealth Occupations 606 $aReligion 606 $aPharmacologic Actions 606 $aChemical Actions and Uses 606 $aHumanities 606 $aHallucinogens 606 $aMysticism 606 $aPsychopharmacology 606 $aResearch 606 $aModels, Psychological 615 4$aHallucinogenic drugs -- Research. 615 4$aHallucinogenic drugs and religious experience. 615 4$aNeuropsychopharmacology. 615 0$aHallucinogenic drugs$xResearch 615 0$aNeuropsychopharmacology 615 0$aHallucinogenic drugs and religious experience 615 2$aScience 615 2$aPsychiatric Somatic Therapies 615 2$aReligious Philosophies 615 2$aPharmacology 615 2$aBehavioral Sciences 615 2$aPsychotropic Drugs 615 2$aModels, Theoretical 615 2$aCentral Nervous System Agents 615 2$aPhysiological Effects of Drugs 615 2$aBehavioral Disciplines and Activities 615 2$aBiological Science Disciplines 615 2$aNatural Science Disciplines 615 2$aInvestigative Techniques 615 2$aTherapeutic Uses 615 2$aHealth Occupations 615 2$aReligion 615 2$aPharmacologic Actions 615 2$aChemical Actions and Uses 615 2$aHumanities 615 2$aHallucinogens 615 2$aMysticism 615 2$aPsychopharmacology 615 2$aResearch 615 2$aModels, Psychological 676 $a154.4 700 $aLanglitz$b Nicolas$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$01563116 801 0$bDE-B1597 801 1$bDE-B1597 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910786185903321 996 $aNeuropsychedelia$93831300 997 $aUNINA
