Jed Z. Buchwald uses as his focus the social and intellectual world of nineteenth-century German physics. Drawing on the lab notes, published papers, and unpublished manuscripts of Heinrich Hertz, Buchwald recreates Hertz's 1887 invention of a device that produced electromagnetic waves in wires. The invention itself was serendipitous and the device was quickly transformed, but Hertz's early experiments led to major innovations in electrodynamics. Buchwald explores the difficulty Hertz had in reconciling the theories of other physicists, including Hermann von Helmholtz and James Clerk Maxwell, and he considers the complex and often problematic connections between theory and experiment. In this first detailed scientific biography of Hertz and his scientific community, Buchwald demonstrates that tacit knowledge can be recovered so that we can begin to identify the unspoken rules that govern scientific practice. 606 $aElectric waves 606 $aPhysicists$zGermany 610 $aelectric waves, heinrich hertz, science, biography, physics, germany, lab notes, invention, electromagnetic, wires, innovation, discovery, experiment, scientific method, community, james clerk maxwell, hermann von helmholtz, tacit knowledge, electrodynamics, induction, cathode ray, energy, radiators, waveguides, fechner-weber theory, conductors, polarization, charge, nonfiction. 615 0$aElectric waves. 615 0$aPhysicists 676 $a537 686 $aUB 2420$2rvk 700 $aBuchwald$b Jed Z$045408 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910781109803321 996 $aThe creation of scientific effects$93855950 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03178oam 2200709I 450 001 9910785793003321 005 20230801224104.0 010 $a1-136-27938-5 010 $a1-283-58675-4 010 $a9786613899200 010 $a0-203-11171-0 010 $a1-136-27939-3 024 7 $a10.4324/9780203111710 035 $a(CKB)2670000000237960 035 $a(EBL)1016122 035 $a(OCoLC)810082640 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000705504 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)12229548 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000705504 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10623516 035 $a(PQKB)10463510 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC1016122 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL1016122 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10596371 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL389920 035 $a(FINmELB)ELB135447 035 $a(EXLCZ)992670000000237960 100 $a20180706d2012 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aMeta-regression analysis in economics and business /$fT.D. Meta-regression analysis addresses the rising ""Tower of Babel"" that current economics and business research has become. Meta-analysis is the statistical analysis of previously published, or reported, research findings on a given hypothesis, empirical effect, phenomenon, or policy intervention. It is a systematic review of all the relevant scientific knowledge on a specific subject and is an essential part o 606 $aEconomics$xResearch$xMethodology 606 $aEconomics$xResearch$xEvaluation$xStatistical methods 606 $aEconomics literature$xEvaluation$xStatistical methods 606 $aRegression analysis 615 0$aEconomics$xResearch$xMethodology. 615 0$aEconomics$xResearch$xEvaluation$xStatistical methods. 615 0$aEconomics literature$xEvaluation$xStatistical methods. 615 0$aRegression analysis. 676 $a330.01/519536 700 $aStanley$b T.
