Spanning the turbulent years from the founding of the Jamestown settlement to the outbreak of the American Revolution, Alvin Rabushka provides the definitive history of taxation in the colonial era, and sets it against the backdrop of enormous economic, political, and social upheaval in the colonies and Europe. Rabushka shows how the colonists strove to minimize, avoid, and evade British and local taxation, and how they used tax incentives to foster settlement. He describes the systems of public finance they created to reduce taxation, and reveals how they gained control over taxes through elected representatives in colonial legislatures. Rabushka takes a comprehensive look at the external taxes imposed on the colonists by Britain, the Netherlands, and Sweden, as well as internal direct taxes like poll and income taxes. He examines indirect taxes like duties and tonnage fees, as well as county and town taxes, church and education taxes, bounties, and other charges. He links the types and amounts of taxes with the means of payment--be it gold coins, agricultural commodities, wampum, or furs--and he compares tax systems and burdens among the colonies and with Britain. This book brings the colonial period to life in all its rich complexity, and shows how colonial attitudes toward taxation offer a unique window into the causes of the revolution. 606 $aTaxation$zUnited States$xHistory$y17th century 606 $aTaxation$zUnited States$xHistory$y18th century 607 $aUnited States$xHistory$yColonial period, ca. 1600-1775 615 0$aTaxation$xHistory 615 0$aTaxation$xHistory 676 $a336.200973/09032 700 $aRabushka$b Alvin$0631402 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910785665003321 996 $aTaxation in colonial America$93809977 997 $aUNINA LEADER 04177oam 22007814a 450 001 9910972517103321 005 20240501132810.0 010 $a9781526110503 010 $a1526110504 010 $a9781526110510 010 $a1526110512 024 7 $a10.7765/9781526110510 035 $a(CKB)3710000000853537 035 $a(EBL)4706755 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC4706755 035 $a(OCoLC)980820607 035 $a(MdBmJHUP)muse59600 035 $a(DE-B1597)660083 035 $a(DE-B1597)9781526110510 035 $a(Perlego)1526645 035 $a(EXLCZ)993710000000853537 100 $a20170330e20172013 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $2rdacontent 182 $2rdamedia 183 $2rdacarrier 200 10$aAbsolute monarchy on the frontiers$eLouis XIV?s military occupations of Lorraine and Savoy /$fPhil McCluskey 205 $a1st ed. 210 1$aBaltimore, Maryland :$cProject Muse,$d2017 210 3$aBaltimore, Md. :$cProject MUSE, $d2017 210 4$dİ2017 215 $a1 online resource (241 p.) 225 0 $aStudies in early modern European history 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record. 311 08$a9780719087165 311 08$a0719087163 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references (pages [207]-216) and index. 327 $aI. It casts important new light on the aims and intentions (and also the limitations) of the French state in the seventeenth century, and makes a significant contribution to understanding a crucial era in the development of civil-military relations. Absolute monarchy on the frontiers presents the occupations of Lorraine and Savoy from a comparative perspective, and draws on the experience of several other French occupations of the period, including those of Nice and Luxembourg. It places the occupations within the context of French frontier strategy and foreign policy in the seventeenth century, with particular reference to the French monarchy's relationship to Lorraine and Savoy as frontier states. It then charts the way the French government administered occupied territories, and how this differed from the practice of 'absolutism' within the kingdom. It also gives an account of how the French occupiers went about courting the interests of local elite groups - the nobilities, the financial and judicial elites and the clergy - and how far these efforts were successful. By investigating these groups this book provides a more wide-ranging view of military occupation in the early modern era, considering social, economic and religious questions, than has so far been available. 410 0$aStudies in early modern European history. 606 $aHISTORY / Europe / France$2bisacsh 607 $aSavoy (France and Italy)$xHistory 607 $aLorraine (France)$xHistory 607 $aFrance$xHistory$yLouis XIV, 1643-1715 607 $aFrance$xHistory, Military$y1643-1715 608 $aElectronic books. 610 $aFrench frontier strategy. 610 $aFrench occupation. 610 $aFrench policy. 610 $aLorraine. 610 $aLouis. 610 $aSavoy. 610 $achurch. 610 $afinancial burdens. 610 $anarrative analysis. 610 $asecular clergy. 610 $asecurity burdens. 610 $asovereign courts. 615 7$aHISTORY / Europe / France. 676 $a944/.033 700 $aMcCluskey$b Phil$01810090 801 0$bMdBmJHUP 801 1$bMdBmJHUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910972517103321 996 $aAbsolute monarchy on the frontiers$94361243 997 $aUNINA
