This book provides a detailed biography with a focus on the influential historical writings he composed to defend Chan claims of a \'mind-to-mind transmission\' tracing back to the historical Buddha. It places his defense of lineage in the context not only of attacks by the rival Tiantai school but also of the larger backdrop of the development of lineage and patriarchs as sources of authority in Chinese Buddhism. It advances new arguments about these Chinese Buddhist innovations, challenges common assumptions about Chan masters, and offers insights into the interactions of Buddhists, Confucians, and the imperial court during the Song. 410 0$aSinica Leidensia ;$vv. 94. 517 3 $aQisong and lineage in Chinese Buddhism 606 $aZen priests$zChina$xLineage$xHistory 606 $aPatriarchy$xReligious aspects$xZen Buddhism 606 $aZen Buddhism$zChina$xHistory 615 0$aZen priests$xLineage$xHistory. 615 0$aPatriarchy$xReligious aspects$xZen Buddhism. 615 0$aZen Buddhism$xHistory. 676 $a294.3/61 700 $aMorrison$b Elizabeth$g(Elizabeth A.)$0129008 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910785143303321 996 $aThe power of patriarchs$93694496 997 $aUNINA
