Overcoming the Politics of Fear --$tNotes --$tIndex 330 $aWhat impulse prompted some newspapers to attribute the murder of 77 Norwegians to Islamic extremists, until it became evident that a right-wing Norwegian terrorist was the perpetrator? Why did Switzerland, a country of four minarets, vote to ban those structures? How did a proposed Muslim cultural center in lower Manhattan ignite a fevered political debate across the United States? In The New Religious Intolerance, Martha C. Nussbaum surveys such developments and identifies the fear behind these reactions. Drawing inspiration from philosophy, history, and literature, she suggests a route past this limiting response and toward a more equitable, imaginative, and free society.Fear, Nussbaum writes, is "more narcissistic than other emotions." Legitimate anxieties become distorted and displaced, driving laws and policies biased against those different from us. Overcoming intolerance requires consistent application of universal principles of respect for conscience. Just as important, it requires greater understanding. Nussbaum challenges us to embrace freedom of religious observance for all, extending to others what we demand for ourselves. She encourages us to expand our capacity for empathetic imagination by cultivating our curiosity, seeking friendship across religious lines, and establishing a consistent ethic of decency and civility. With this greater understanding and respect, Nussbaum argues, we can rise above the politics of fear and toward a more open and inclusive future. 606 $aFreedom of religion 606 $aReligious tolerance 606 $aReligious discrimination 606 $aFear$xReligious aspects 615 0$aFreedom of religion. 615 0$aReligious tolerance. 615 0$aReligious discrimination. 615 0$aFear$xReligious aspects. 676 $a201/.723 700 $aNussbaum$b Martha Craven$f1947-$0144658 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910966450203321 996 $aThe new religious intolerance$94358578 997 $aUNINA 999 $p$9.90$u11/28/2017$5Relig LEADER 00641nam 2200241 450 001 996652372303316 005 20250411113013.0 100 $a20250411d--------km y0itay5003 ba 101 0 $aspa 102 $aES 105 $ay 00 y 200 1 $aColección de cánticos por Edelvives 210 $aZaragoza$cVives$d[s.d.] 215 $a464 p.$d16 cm 606 0 $aNote musicali$2BNCF 676 $a787.87193 801 0$aIT$bcba$gREICAT 912 $a996652372303316 951 $aXIII.3.D. 790$b287725 L.M.$cXIII.3.D.$d569525 959 $aBK 969 $aUMA 996 $aColección de cánticos por Edelvives$94369280 997 $aUNISA
