Didier Fassin traces the deep roots of the AIDS crisis to apartheid and, before that, to the colonial period. One person in ten is infected with HIV in South Africa, and President Thabo Mbeki has initiated a global controversy by funding questionable medical research, casting doubt on the benefits of preventing mother-to-child transmission, and embracing dissidents who challenge the viral theory of AIDS. Fassin contextualizes Mbeki's position by sensitively exploring issues of race and genocide that surround this controversy. Basing his discussion on vivid ethnographical data collected in the townships of Johannesburg, he passionately demonstrates that the unprecedented epidemiological crisis in South Africa is a demographic catastrophe as well as a human tragedy, one that cannot be understood without reference to the social history of the country, in particular to institutionalized racial inequality as the fundamental principle of government during the past century. 410 0$aCalifornia series in public anthropology. 606 $aAIDS (Disease)$xSocial aspects$zSouth Africa 606 $aAIDS (Disease)$xPolitical aspects$zSouth Africa 606 $aAIDS (Disease)$xGovernment policy$zSouth Africa 610 $aaids epidemic. 610 $aaids. 610 $aanc government. 610 $aanthropology. 610 $aapartheid. 610 $acolonial period. 610 $acolonialism. 610 $ademographic studies. 610 $adissidents. 610 $aepidemiology. 610 $aethnography. 610 $agenocide. 610 $aglobal aids crisis. 610 $aglobal controversy. 610 $agovernment and governing. 610 $ahealth. 610 $ahiv. 610 $ahuman tragedy. 610 $ajohannesburg. 610 $amedical anthropology. 610 $amedical research. 610 $amedical. 610 $amother to child transmission. 610 $apolitical. 610 $apolitics. 610 $apresident thabo mbeki. 610 $aquestionable medical research. 610 $arace theory. 610 $aracial inequality. 610 $asocial history. 610 $asouth africa. 610 $asouth african history. 610 $aviral theory. 615 0$aAIDS (Disease)$xSocial aspects 615 0$aAIDS (Disease)$xPolitical aspects 615 0$aAIDS (Disease)$xGovernment policy 676 $a362.196/979200968 700 $aFassin$b Didier$0719773 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910784419903321 996 $aWhen bodies remember$93695219 997 $aUNINA
