Asking how the emerging notion of a sacred geography challenged the leading intellectuals and ecclesiastical authorities, Brouria Bitton-Ashkelony deftly reshapes our understanding of early Christian mentalities by unraveling the process by which a territory of grace became a territory of power. Examining ancient writers' responses to the rising practice of pilgrimage, Bitton-Ashkelony offers a nuanced reading of their thinking on the merits and the demerits of pilgrimage, revealing theological and ecclesiastical motivations that have been overlooked, and questioning the long-held assumption of scholars that pilgrimage was only a popular, not an elite, religious practice. In addition to Greek and Latin sources, she includes Syriac material, which allows her to build a rich picture of the emerging theology of landscape that took shape over the fourth to sixth centuries. 410 0$aTransformation of the classical heritage ;$v38. 606 $aChristian pilgrims and pilgrimages$zPalestine$xHistory of doctrines$yEarly church, ca. 30-600 606 $aPalestine in Christianity$xHistory of doctrines$yEarly church, ca. 30-600 607 $aPalestine$xIn Christianity$xHistory of doctrines$yEarly church, ca. 30-600 610 $aancient world. 610 $aantiquity. 610 $aaristocracy. 610 $aaugustine. 610 $abible. 610 $achristian pilgrims. 610 $achristian world. 610 $achristianity. 610 $aclass. 610 $acloister. 610 $aearly church. 610 $aelite religion. 610 $afolk religion. 610 $agrace. 610 $agregory of nyssa. 610 $aholiness. 610 $aholy land. 610 $aholy men. 610 $aholy sites. 610 $aholy space. 610 $ajerome. 610 $ajerusalem. 610 $alandscape. 610 $amonasteries. 610 $amonasticism. 610 $amonks. 610 $amonuments. 610 $anonfiction. 610 $anuns. 610 $apalestine. 610 $apilgrimage. 610 $apilgrims. 610 $apopular religion. 610 $arelics. 610 $areligion. 610 $areligious devotion. 610 $areligious practices. 610 $asacred geography. 610 $asacred space. 610 $asaints. 610 $atheology. 610 $atombs. 610 $atravel. 610 $aworship. 615 0$aChristian pilgrims and pilgrimages$xHistory of doctrines 615 0$aPalestine in Christianity$xHistory of doctrines 676 $a263/.0425694/09015 700 $aBitton-Ashkelony$b Bruria$0625129 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910783668703321 996 $aEncountering the sacred$91220033 997 $aUNINA
