The abolition of the Scottish and Irish Parliaments in 1707 and 1800 created a United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland centred upon the Westminster legislature. What did the making of the monolith mean for the four nations? Did conceptions of English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh identities flourish, change or wither as a consequence to the growth of the imperial Parliament and to what extent did Parliament help or hinder a developing sense of Britishness as a new nationality? The groundbreaking essays in this volume, all based on extensive original research, address these questions from an unusually wide variety of perspectives, showing how the parliaments at Dublin, Edinburgh and, especially, Westminster, were seen and used in very different ways by people from very different communities. Parliament may have been conceived as a repository of 'the' national interest, but in practice it was the site of four national and multiple cross-national identities. This fascinating book is a major contribution to the history of the forging of the United Kingdom and national identity and will be essential reading for all undergraduates of history and politics. 410 0$aUCL/Neale series on British history. 606 $aLegislative bodies$zGreat Britain$xHistory 606 $aLegislative bodies$zIreland$xHistory 610 $aBritish Empire. 610 $aBritish Isles. 610 $aIrish Parliament. 610 $aLiverpool petitions. 610 $aScottish Parliament. 610 $aUnited Kingdom of Great Britain. 610 $aWestminster legislature. 610 $ageo-political communities. 610 $aimperial identity. 610 $anational identity. 610 $aold Corruption. 610 $apolicy debate. 610 $aunions. 610 $avirtual representation. 615 0$aLegislative bodies$xHistory. 615 0$aLegislative bodies$xHistory. 676 $a328.41/09/03 701 $aHoppit$b Julian$0506201 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910783231103321 996 $aParliaments, nations and identities in Britain and Ireland, 1660-1850$93837029 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02527nam 22004333 450 001 9910915711703321 005 20231110225457.0 010 $a3-657-79126-4 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC7001583 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL7001583 035 $a(CKB)22978441000041 035 $a(NjHacI)9922978441000041 035 $a(EXLCZ)9922978441000041 100 $a20220602d2022 uy 0 101 0 $ager 135 $aurcnu|||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aSchriften Zur Geschichte und Frühgeschichte der Basken und des Baskischen $eHerausgegeben Von Bernhard Hurch 210 1$aBoston :$cBRILL,$d2022. 210 4$d©2022. 215 $a1 online resource (504 pages) 225 1 $aHumboldt, Schriften Zur ... 410 0$aHumboldt, Schriften Zur ...
