Mainstream economics has taken legitimacy from the historical failure of command economies. But this view has not been balanced by an examination of the performance of laissez-faire economies, the closest to the pure market model. Lebanon provides a unique test case in this regard. The book assesses Lebanon's development during 1948-2002, including its industrial and financial performance. The dynamics of the laissez-faire system is separately studied from a Post-Keynesian perspective, highlighting institutional behavior. It is found that laissez-faire is not a sufficient condition for economic development, and can even be counterproductive. 410 0$aSocial, Economic and Political Studies of the Middle East and Asia ;$v92. 517 3 $aThe Limits of Laissez-faire 606 $aEconomic development$xPolitical aspects$zLebanon$xHistory$y20th century 606 $aEconomic development$xPolitical aspects 606 $aEconomic history 607 $aLebanon$xEconomic conditions$y20th century 615 0$aEconomic development$xPolitical aspects$xHistory 615 0$aEconomic development$xPolitical aspects. 615 0$aEconomic history. 676 $a330.95692/043 700 $aGaspard$b Toufic$01504415 801 0$bNL-LeKB 801 1$bNL-LeKB 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910783205803321 996 $aA Political Economy of Lebanon, 1948-2002$93733406 997 $aUNINA
