Oral Legal Traditions of Gypsies and Some American Equivalents --$tContributors --$tIndex 330 $aApproximately one thousand years ago Gypsies, or Roma, left their native India. Today Gypsies can be found in countries throughout the world, their distinct culture still intact in spite of the intense persecution they have endured. This authoritative collection brings together leading Gypsy and non-Gypsy scholars to examine the Romani legal system, an autonomous body of law based on an oral tradition and existing alongside dominant national legal networks. For centuries the Roma have survived by using defensive strategies, especially the absolute exclusion of gadje (non-Gypsies) from their private lives, their values, and information about Romani language and social institutions. Sexuality, gender, and the body are fundamental to Gypsy law, with rules that govern being pure (vujo) or impure (marime). Women play an important role in maintaining legal customs, having the power to sanction and to contaminate, but they are not directly involved in legal proceedings. These essays offer a comparative perspective on Romani legal procedures and identity, including topics such as the United States' criminalization of many aspects of Gypsy law, parallels between Jewish and Gypsy law, and legal distinctions between Romani communities. The contributors raise broad theoretical questions that transcend the specific Gypsy context and offer important insights into understanding oral legal traditions. Together they suggest a theoretical framework for explaining the coexistence of formal and informal law within a single legal system. They also highlight the ethical dilemmas encountered in comparative law research and definitions of "human rights." 606 $aLaw, Romani 606 $aRomanies$xLegal status, laws, etc 610 $aacademic. 610 $acommunity. 610 $acultural studies. 610 $aculture. 610 $agypsies. 610 $agypsy community. 610 $aindia. 610 $aindian. 610 $alanguage. 610 $alegal issues. 610 $alegal procedures. 610 $alegal system. 610 $amiddle east. 610 $amiddle eastern. 610 $aminority groups. 610 $aoppression. 610 $aoral tradition. 610 $apersecution. 610 $aroma. 610 $aromani community. 610 $aromani language. 610 $arules. 610 $ascholarly. 610 $asmall communities. 610 $asocial history. 610 $asocial studies. 610 $astrategy. 610 $atheoretical. 610 $atraditional. 610 $atraditions. 610 $atraveler. 615 0$aLaw, Romani. 615 0$aRomanies$xLegal status, laws, etc. 676 $a346.01/3 701 $aWeyrauch$b Walter O$g(Walter Otto),$f1919-$0277988 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910782966103321 996 $aGypsy law$93723336 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02086nas 2200733- 450 001 9910913543103321 005 20241221110044.0 011 $a2250-1460 035 $a(DE-599)ZDB2563882-8 035 $a(OCoLC)797826766 035 $a(CKB)36703280000041 035 $a(CONSER)--2013247768 035 $a(MiFhGG)68QW 035 $a(EXLCZ)9936703280000041 100 $a20120530a20119999 --- - 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur||||||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 00$aAsian journal of pharmaceutical research and health care 210 1$aIndia :$cAkondi Butchi Raju,$d[2011]- 300 $aRefereed/Peer-reviewed 311 08$a2250-1444 517 1 $aAJPRHC 531 0 $aAsian j. pharm. res. health care 606 $aPharmacology$vPeriodicals 606 $aDrugs$xDesign 606 $aDrugs 606 $aPharmacology 606 $aDrug Design 606 $aDrug Evaluation 606 $aPharmaceutical Preparations 606 $aPharmacology 606 $aPharmacologie$vPériodiques 606 $aMédicaments$xConception 606 $aMédicaments 606 $aPharmacologie 606 $apharmacology$2aat 606 $aDrugs$xDesign$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00898790 606 $aDrugs$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00898761 606 $aPharmacology$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01060259 608 $aPeriodical 608 $aPeriodicals.$2fast 615 0$aPharmacology 615 0$aDrugs$xDesign. 615 0$aDrugs. 615 0$aPharmacology. 615 2$aDrug Design 615 2$aDrug Evaluation 615 2$aPharmaceutical Preparations 615 2$aPharmacology 615 6$aPharmacologie 615 6$aMédicaments$xConception. 615 6$aMédicaments. 615 6$aPharmacologie. 615 7$apharmacology. 615 7$aDrugs$xDesign. 615 7$aDrugs. 615 7$aPharmacology. 906 $aJOURNAL 912 $a9910913543103321 996 $aAsian Journal of Pharmaceutical Research and Health Care$94298079 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02930oas 2201177 a 450 001 9910333135503321 005 20251114213013.0 011 $a1095-9947 035 $a(DE-599)ZDB1467514-6 035 $a(DE-599)1467514-6 035 $a(OCoLC)36967829 035 $a(CONSER)sn 97001916 035 $a(CKB)954922650162 035 $a(EXLCZ)99954922650162 100 $a19970527a19919999 sy a 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurcnu|||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aFish & shellfish immunology 210 1$a[London] :$cAcademic Press 210 31$a[Amsterdam, Netherlands]$cElsevier 215 $a1 online resource (volumes) 300 $aRefereed/Peer-reviewed 311 08$a1050-4648 517 3 $aFish and shellfish immunology 531 0 $aFish shellfish immunol. 606 $aFishes$xImmunology$vPeriodicals 606 $aShellfish$xImmunology$vPeriodicals 606 $aCrustacea$ximmunology 606 $aFishes$ximmunology 606 $aMollusca$ximmunology 606 $aAnimals 606 $aPoissons$xImmunologie$vPe?riodiques 606 $aCrustace?s$xImmunologie$vPe?riodiques 606 $aFishes$xImmunology$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00926518 606 $aFischereiwissenschaft$2gnd 606 $aZeitschrift$2gnd 606 $aOnline-Ressource$2gnd 606 $aSchalentiere$2gnd 606 $aImmunbiologie$2gnd 606 $aFische$2gnd 608 $aPeriodicals.$2fast 615 0$aFishes$xImmunology 615 0$aShellfish$xImmunology 615 12$aCrustacea$ximmunology. 615 12$aFishes$ximmunology. 615 12$aMollusca$ximmunology. 615 02$aAnimals. 615 6$aPoissons$xImmunologie 615 6$aCrustace?s$xImmunologie 615 7$aFishes$xImmunology. 615 7$aFischereiwissenschaft 615 7$aZeitschrift. 615 7$aOnline-Ressource 615 7$aSchalentiere 615 7$aImmunbiologie 615 7$aFische 676 $a597 801 0$bOH1 801 1$bOH1 801 2$bNSD 801 2$bOCL 801 2$bMYG 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bMYG 801 2$bGUA 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bMUQ 801 2$bOCL 801 2$bOCLCS 801 2$bNSD 801 2$bCIT 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bEUW 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bDEFHM 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bOCLCA 801 2$bNLE 801 2$bOCLCF 801 2$bUKMGB 801 2$bVT2 801 2$bUK7LJ 801 2$bDKU 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bCASUM 801 2$bUAB 801 2$bLDP 801 2$bQGK 801 2$bZYU 801 2$bOCLCA 801 2$bOCLCL 801 2$bOCLCA 801 2$bOCLCQ 906 $aJOURNAL 912 $a9910333135503321 996 $aFish & shellfish immunology$91897881 997 $aUNINA
