Over the subsequent four centuries, cattle, horses, and sheep have created a massive ecological experiment on these arid grasslands, changing them in ways we can never know with certainty. The Appleton-Whittell Research Ranch in the high desert of southeastern Arizona is an 8,000-acre sanctuary where grazing has been banned since 1968. In this spirited account of thirty years of research at the ranch, Carl and Jane Bock summarize the results of their fieldwork, which was aimed at understanding the dynamics of grasslands in the absence of livestock. The View from Bald Hill provides an intimate look at the natural history of this unique site and illuminates many issues pertaining to the protection and restoration of our nation's grasslands. 410 0$aOrganisms and environments ;$v1. 606 $aGrassland ecology$zArizona$zAppleton-Whittell Research Ranch Sanctuary 607 $aAppleton-Whittell Research Ranch Sanctuary (Ariz.) 610 $a1500s. 610 $aacademic. 610 $aamerican southwest. 610 $aanimal sanctuary. 610 $aarizona. 610 $abreeding animals. 610 $adomestic livestock. 610 $adomestic. 610 $aecological. 610 $aecology. 610 $afieldwork. 610 $agrasslands. 610 $agrazing cattle. 610 $agrazing livestock. 610 $ahabitats. 610 $alivestock. 610 $anatural history. 610 $anatural world. 610 $araising animals. 610 $araising cattle. 610 $araising horses. 610 $araising sheep. 610 $aranch life. 610 $aregional. 610 $aresearch. 610 $asanctuary. 610 $ascholarly. 610 $asouthwestern united states. 610 $aspecies. 615 0$aGrassland ecology 676 $a577.4/09791/79 700 $aBock$b Carl E.$f1942-$01512098 701 $aBock$b Jane H$0972553 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910782910703321 996 $aThe view from Bald Hill$93745772 997 $aUNINA
