The study argues that atheism was part of the discursive and religious context from which Transcendentalism emerged. Tendencies toward atheism were already inherent in Transcendentalist thought. The atheist scenario came to the surface in the controversy about Emerson?s ?new views.? Contemporary critics charged that the deity Emerson worshipped was himself. Emersonian Transcendentalism thus anticipated some of the central concerns in the works of German atheists like Feuerbach. From idealism to atheism seemed but a short step. 410 0$aStudies in the history of Christian traditions ;$vv. 136. 606 $aTranscendentalism (New England)$xHistory 606 $aAtheism$zGermany$xHistory 606 $aAtheism$xPhilosophy 606 $aTranscendentalism$xHistory 615 0$aTranscendentalism (New England)$xHistory. 615 0$aAtheism$xHistory. 615 0$aAtheism$xPhilosophy. 615 0$aTranscendentalism$xHistory. 676 $a141.3 700 $aHurth$b Elisabeth$f1961-$01529071 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910782501203321 996 $aBetween faith and unbelief$93773093 997 $aUNINA
