In the areas where peasant agriculture was the predominant form of production, changes in the land tenure system paved the way for a modern system of private property relations. A new class differentiation emerged and the indigenous chiefs turned into powerful landowners. In addition to this, new light is shed on the dynamics of caste formation as a result of the early colonial encounter. 410 0$aTANAP monographs on the history of the Asian-European interaction ;$vv. 9. 606 $aLand tenure$zSri Lanka$xHistory$y18th century 607 $aSri Lanka$xRural conditions$y18th century 615 0$aLand tenure$xHistory 676 $a306.3/49095493 686 $a15.75$2bcl 700 $aDewasiri$b Nirmal Ranjith$01525653 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910782497503321 996 $aThe adaptable peasant$93767176 997 $aUNINA
