Inspired by the work of his predecessors and contemporaries, Linnaeus was the first scientist to develop a coherent system for describing, classifying and naming organisms. The method he developed, known as binominal nomenclature, is the classification system still used in botany and zoology today.; Philosophia Botanica was first published in 1751. Its publication followed that of several earlier works written by Linnaeus such as his Systema Naturae (1735) and Fundamenta Botanica (1736). Philosophia Botanica is an expanded version of Fundamenta Botanica with added commentary, and represents a critical stage in the evolution of Linnaeus' ideas and the development of his binominal nomenclature applied to plants.; In this new translation of Philosophia Botanica, example pages from Linnaeus' original Latin text are presented alongside Stephen Freer's English translation of the complete text. The book contains images of all eleven of the original plates, which illustrate the shapes of leaves and other plant structures and forms. Also included are Linnaeus' explanations of the effects of soil and climatic conditions on plant growth, plus six short memoranda that describe Linnaeus' botanical excursions, his ideas for garden lay-out and herbarium construction, and his thoughts on what was required of a botanist and his pupils. The Introduction, dedicated to the memory of Professor William Stearn is by Professor Paul Alan Cox of the National Tropical Botanical Gardens, Hawaii.; This beautifully presented translation of Philosophia Botanica, is a valuable resource to botanists, taxonomists, r storians and all interested individuals, who will gain greater access to, and new insights into, the work of Carl 330 8 $aLinnaeus, the father of modern systematics. 606 $aPlants$vClassification 606 $aBotany 615 0$aPlants 615 0$aBotany. 676 $a580.12 700 $aLinne?$b Carl von$f1707-1778.$0353341 701 $aFreer$b Stephen$01480419 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910782486403321 996 $aLinnaeus' Philosophia botanica$93697057 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03263oam 2200493I 450 001 9910961771203321 005 20190826145055.0 010 $a9789004365216 010 $a9004365214 024 7 $a10.1163/9789004365216 035 $a(CKB)4100000003616839 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC5449715 035 $a(OCoLC)1043913614$z(OCoLC)1044821307 035 $a(nllekb)BRILL9789004365216 035 $a(EXLCZ)994100000003616839 100 $a20180712d2018 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurcnu|||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 04$aThe foundations of Arabic linguistics III $ethe development of a tradition: continuity and change /$fedited by Georgine Ayoub, Kees Versteegh 205 $a1st ed. 210 1$aLeiden :$cBrill. 210 4$dc2018. 215 $a1 online resource (x, 284 pages) 225 1 $aStudies in Semitic Languages and Linguistics ;$v94 311 08$a9789004363465 311 08$a9004363467 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $tFront Matter -- $tCopyright Page -- $tList of Contributors -- $tIntroduction /$rGeorgine Ayoub and Kees Versteegh -- $tCase and Reference /$rGeorgine Ayoub -- $tThe Grammatical and Lexicographical Traditions /$rRamzi Baalbaki -- $tA Twelfth Century League Table of Arab Grammarians /$rMichael G. After S?bawayhi, considerable changes in the linguistic situation took place. The language of the Arab Bedouin described by him died as a native language. Grammars also changed, even if grammarians used for the most part the data given by S?bawayhi. This volume aims to determine continuities and changes in Arabic grammars, providing a new perspective on the impact of cultural and historical developments and on the founding principles of S?bawayhi's Kit?b . 410 0$aStudies in Semitic Languages and Linguistics$v94. 606 $aArabic language$xGrammar$xHistory 615 0$aArabic language$xGrammar$xHistory. 676 $a492.7/5 701 $aAyoub$b Georgine$01786787 701 $aVersteegh$b C.
