In the ocean, these invasions have long been mediated by the uptake and subsequent release of ballast water in ocean-going vessels. Increasing world trade and a concomitantly growing global shipping fleet composed of larger and faster vessels, combined with a series of prominent ballast-mediated invasions over the past two decades, have prompted active national and international interest in ballast water management. Assessing the relationship between propagule pressure and invasion risk in ballast water informs the regulation of ballast water by helping the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) better understand the relationship between the concentration of living organisms in ballast water discharges and the probability of nonindigenous organisms successfully establishing populations in U.S. waters. The report evaluates the risk-release relationship in the context of differing environmental and ecological conditions, including estuarine and freshwater systems as well as the waters of the three-mile territorial sea. It recommends how various approaches can be used by regulatory agencies to best inform risk management decisions on the allowable concentrations of living organisms in discharged ballast water in order to safeguard against the establishment of new aquatic nonindigenous species, and to protect and preserve existing indigenous populations of fish, shellfish, and wildlife and other beneficial uses of the nation's waters. Assessing the relationship between propagule pressure and invasion risk in ballast water provides valuable information that can be used by federal agencies, such as the EPA, policy makers, environmental scientists, and researchers."--Publisher's description. 606 $aBallast water$xResearch 606 $aBallast water$xEnvironmental aspects$zUnited States 606 $aIntroduced organisms$xEnvironmental aspects$zUnited States 606 $aMarine biological invasions 615 0$aBallast water$xResearch. 615 0$aBallast water$xEnvironmental aspects 615 0$aIntroduced organisms$xEnvironmental aspects 615 0$aMarine biological invasions. 676 $a578.62 712 02$aNational Research Council (U.S.).$bCommittee on Assessing Numeric Limits for Living Organisms in Ballast Water. 712 02$aNational Research Council (U.S.).$bWater Science and Technology Board. 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910781889403321 996 $aAssessing the relationship between propagule pressure and invasion risk in ballast water$93754391 997 $aUNINA LEADER 06840nam 22007214a 450 001 9910782478603321 005 20230425180906.0 010 $a1-281-92162-9 010 $a9786611921620 010 $a90-474-2121-3 024 7 $a10.1163/ej.9789004158931.i-614 035 $a(CKB)1000000000556739 035 $a(EBL)467815 035 $a(OCoLC)303661833 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000270351 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11194832 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000270351 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10262130 035 $a(PQKB)10469741 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC467815 035 $a(OCoLC)166322336 035 $a(nllekb)BRILL9789047421214 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL467815 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10270747 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL192162 035 $a(PPN)174389957 035 $a(EXLCZ)991000000000556739 100 $a20071024d2007 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 00$aWest over sea $estudies in Scandinavian sea-borne expansion and settlement before 1300 : a festschrift in honour of Dr Barbara Crawford /$feditors, Beverley Ballin Smith, Simon Taylor, Gareth Williams 210 1$aLeiden ;$aBoston :$cBrill,$d2007. 215 $a1 online resource (xxix, 581 pages) $cillustrations, maps 225 1 $aThe northern world,$x1569-1462 ;$vv. 31 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record. 311 0 $a90-04-15893-6 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $tPreliminary material /$rB. The volume has been prepared in tribute to the work of Barbara E. Crawford on this subject, and to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the publication of her seminal book, Scandinavian Scotland. Reflecting Dr Crawford's interests, the papers cover a range of disciplines, and are arranged into four main sections: History and Cultural Contacts; The Church and the Cult of Saints; Archaeology, Material Culture and Settlement; Place-Names and Language. The combination provides a variety of new perspectives both on the Viking expansion and on Scandinavia's continued contacts across the North Sea in the post-Viking period. Contributors include: Lesley Abrams, Haki Antonsson, Beverley Ballin Smith, James Barrett, Paul Bibire, Nicholas Brooks, Dauvit Broun, Margaret Cormac, Neil Curtis, Clare Downham, Gillian Fellows-Jensen, Ian Fisher, Katherine Forsyth, Peder Gammeltoft, Sarah Jane Gibbon, Mark Hall, Hans Emil Liden, Christopher Lowe, Joanne McKenzie, Christopher Morris, Elizabeth Okasha, Elizabeth Ridel, Liv Schei, Jón Viðar Sigurðsson, Brian Smith, Steffen Stumann Hansen, Frans Arne Stylegård, Simon Taylor, William Thomson, Gareth Williams, Doreen Waugh and Alex Woolf. 410 0$aNorthern world ;$v31. 606 $aVikings$zGreat Britain 606 $aLand settlement patterns$zGreat Britain 606 $aExcavations (Archaeology)$zGreat Britain 606 $aViking antiquities 615 0$aVikings 615 0$aLand settlement patterns 615 0$aExcavations (Archaeology) 615 0$aViking antiquities. 676 $a948.023 701 $aCrawford$b B.
