American strategists have been widely credited with most of these; Canadians, most have assumed, did not conduct their own strategic analysis. Avoiding Armageddon soundly debunks this notion. Drawing on previously classified government records, Richter reveals that Canadian defence officials did come to independent strategic understandings of the most critical issues of the nuclear age. Canadian appreciation of deterrence, arms control, and strategic stability differed conceptually from the US models. Similarly, Canadian thinking on the controversial issues of air defence and the domestic acquisition of nuclear weapons was primarily influenced by decidedly Canadian interests. Avoiding Armageddon is a work with far-reaching implications. It illustrates Canada's considerable latitude for independent defence thinking while providing key historical information that helps make sense of the contemporary Canadian defence debate. 410 0$aStudies in Canadian military history. 606 $aNuclear weapons$xGovernment policy$zCanada$xHistory 606 $aArms control$xGovernment policy$zCanada 607 $aCanada$xStrategic aspects 607 $aCanada$xMilitary policy 615 0$aNuclear weapons$xGovernment policy$xHistory. 615 0$aArms control$xGovernment policy 676 $a355/.033071 700 $aRichter$b Andrew$f1965-$01571765 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910781657003321 996 $aAvoiding Armageddon$93846306 997 $aUNINA LEADER 04040oam 22006734a 450 001 9910597128503321 005 20230621135412.0 010 $a1-61249-664-4 035 $a(CKB)5670000000389544 035 $a(OCoLC)1346942671 035 $a(MdBmJHUP)musev2_103252 035 $a(oapen)https://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/93639 035 $a(Perlego)3898348 035 $a(oapen)doab93639 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC7248010 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL7248010 035 $a(EXLCZ)995670000000389544 100 $a20100522d2009 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|||||||nn|n 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 02$aCultural History of Jews in California : $eThe Jewish Role in American Life / $fBruce Zuckerman, editor ; William Deverell, guest editor ; Lisa Ansell, associate editor 205 $a1st ed. 210 $cPurdue University Press$d2009 210 1$aWest Lafayette, Ind. :$cPurdue University Press for the USC Casden Institute for the Study of the Jewish Role in American Life,$d2009. 210 4$dİ2009. 215 $a1 online resource (xii, 128 pages) : $cillustrations ; 225 0 $aThe Jewish role in American Life,$x1934-7529 ;$vv. 7 311 08$a1-55753-564-7 327 $tIsaias Hellman and the creation of California /$rFrances Dinkelspiel --$tA twice-told journey :$tSarah Newmark in the Russian Polish shtetl : how a Jewish California matron confronted her European heritage /$rKaren S. First, the aim of the collection of essays and studies in this volume is intended to stress the cultural aspects of the Jewish experience of coming up to and living in the Golden State. Second, while this volume looks at the Jewish experience in California in general - nonetheless, particular emphasis is placed on Southern California, where the Casden Institute is situated.
