CONCLUSION"" 330 3 $aWhy do prices in Spain's regions fail to converge? The prime suspects for this puzzling result are differences in regional barriers to entry in retail distribution. This paper develops a Cournot-Nash model of imperfect competition to illustrate the effect of barriers on prices. A unique data set-derived from an extensive analysis of competition policies in Spain- provides evidence that barriers to entry increase regional prices. The evidence also suggests that, consistent with the model's predictions, barriers to entry raise prices up to a point, and thus indicate that barriers have a threshold effect on prices. 410 0$aIMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;$vNo. 2006/231 606 $aBarriers to entry (Industrial organization)$zSpain 606 $aCompetition$zSpain 606 $aPrices$zSpain$xRegional disparities 606 $aRetail trade$zSpain 606 $aCompetition$2imf 606 $aConsumer price indexes$2imf 606 $aDeflation$2imf 606 $aEconometric analysis$2imf 606 $aEconometrics & economic statistics$2imf 606 $aEconometrics$2imf 606 $aFinance$2imf 606 $aFinance: General$2imf 606 $aFinancial markets$2imf 606 $aGeneral Financial Markets: General (includes Measurement and Data)$2imf 606 $aInflation$2imf 606 $aMacroeconomics$2imf 606 $aMarket Structure and Pricing: Oligopoly and Other Forms of Market Imperfection$2imf 606 $aPanel Data Models$2imf 606 $aPrice indexes$2imf 606 $aPrice Level$2imf 606 $aPrices$2imf 606 $aSpatio-temporal Models$2imf 606 $aSwitching Regression Models$2imf 606 $aThreshold analysis$2imf 606 $aThreshold Regression Models$2imf 606 $aTruncated and Censored Models$2imf 607 $aSpain$2imf 615 0$aBarriers to entry (Industrial organization) 615 0$aCompetition 615 0$aPrices$xRegional disparities. 615 0$aRetail trade 615 7$aCompetition 615 7$aConsumer price indexes 615 7$aDeflation 615 7$aEconometric analysis 615 7$aEconometrics & economic statistics 615 7$aEconometrics 615 7$aFinance 615 7$aFinance: General 615 7$aFinancial markets 615 7$aGeneral Financial Markets: General (includes Measurement and Data) 615 7$aInflation 615 7$aMacroeconomics 615 7$aMarket Structure and Pricing: Oligopoly and Other Forms of Market Imperfection 615 7$aPanel Data Models 615 7$aPrice indexes 615 7$aPrice Level 615 7$aPrices 615 7$aSpatio-temporal Models 615 7$aSwitching Regression Models 615 7$aThreshold analysis 615 7$aThreshold Regression Models 615 7$aTruncated and Censored Models 700 $aHoffmaister$b Willy$01801246 712 02$aInternational Monetary Fund.$bEuropean Department. 801 0$bDcWaIMF 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910955021803321 996 $aBarriers to Retail Competition and Prices$94372441 997 $aUNINA
