They classified madness according to social behaviour, not mental pathology. Moreover, their conception of the person did not recognise the same physical and mental categories that inform Western medical science, and psychiatry in particular was not officially introduced to PNG until the late 1950s. Its practitioners claimed that it could adequately accommodate the cultural variation among Melanesian societies. 410 0$aSocial identities ;$vv. 6. 606 $aPapuans$zPapua New Guinea$zWestern Highlands Province$xPsychology 606 $aPapuans$xMental health$zPapua New Guinea$zWestern Highlands Province 606 $aPapuans$zPapua New Guinea$zWestern Highlands Province$xSocial conditions 606 $aPsychiatry, Transcultural$zPapua New Guinea$zWestern Highlands Province 606 $aEthnopsychology$zPapua New Guinea$zWestern Highlands Province 607 $aWestern Highlands Province (Papua New Guinea)$xSocial conditions 615 0$aPapuans$xPsychology. 615 0$aPapuans$xMental health 615 0$aPapuans$xSocial conditions. 615 0$aPsychiatry, Transcultural 615 0$aEthnopsychology 676 $a305.9/0840899912 700 $aGoddard$b Michael$g(Michael Bruce)$0867867 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910781257703321 996 $aOut of place$93674062 997 $aUNINA
