Investigating the ways in which police practices have evolved in relation to labour strikes and protests, Intelligent Control examines the means by which police forces have developed more coercive and consent-based approaches to regulating social unrest. Willem de Lint and Alan Hall argue that police forces have been gradually adapting public order operations to match or reflect wider trends in politics and society. The main such development is the enfolding of neoliberalism. Police and labour and protester adaptations have followed a fine line between legitimacy and illegitimacy, consent and coercion. The authors explore the development of consent policing from its roots in labour strike countering and the emergence of what they call 'intelligent control' from expanded covert, intelligence-gathering operations. A concise study of how police practices changed from the 1960s to the present day, Intelligent Control is an informative account of a revolution in modern policing. 606 $aPolice$zCanada 607 $aKanada$2swd 615 0$aPolice 676 $a363.20971 700 $aDe Lint$b Willem$f1959-$01577404 702 $aHall$b Alan$f1954- 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910781113403321 996 $aIntelligent control$93855985 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03618nas 2201045-a 450 001 996204709603316 005 20230707213041.0 011 $a1540-6210 035 $a(DE-599)ZDB2045553-7 035 $a(OCoLC)46614557 035 $a(CKB)954921357407 035 $a(CONSER)--2002214340 035 $a(EXLCZ)99954921357407 100 $a20010328a19409999 s-- a 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurmnu|||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 00$aPublic administration review 210 $aChicago, Ill. $cAmerican Society for Public Administration$d1940- 215 $a1 online resource (volumes) 300 $aRefereed/Peer-reviewed 300 $aTitle from title screen (JSTOR, viewed Feb. 11, 2004). 300 $aSome issues also have a theme title. 300 $aPublished for the American Society for Public Administration by Blackwell Publishers, 2001- 300 $aPlace of publication varies: Washington, D.C., Sept. 1964-2000; Malden, Mass., 2001- 311 $a0033-3352 517 3 $aPAR 531 $aPUBLIC ADMIN REV 531 $aPUBLIC ADM REV 531 $aPUBLIC ADM.
