Focusing on the scientific tradition of philosophy, Daniel Graham argues that Presocratic philosophy is not a mere patchwork of different schools and styles of thought. Rather, there is a discernible and unified Ionian tradition that dominates Presocratic debates. Graham rejects the common interpretation of the early Ionians as "material monists" and also the view of the later Ionians as desperately trying to save scientific philosophy from Parmenides' criticisms. In Graham's view, Parmenides plays a constructive role in shaping the scientific debates of the fifth century BC. Accordingly, the history of Presocratic philosophy can be seen not as a series of dialectical failures, but rather as a series of theoretical advances that led to empirical discoveries. Indeed, the Ionian tradition can be seen as the origin of the scientific conception of the world that we still hold today. 606 $aPhilosophy, Ancient 606 $aPre-Socratic philosophers 610 $aAbsolute (philosophy). 610 $aAlcmaeon of Croton. 610 $aAlexander of Aphrodisias. 610 $aAllusion. 610 $aAmbiguity. 610 $aAnalogy. 610 $aAnaxagoras. 610 $aAnaximander. 610 $aAnaximenes. 610 $aAntidosis. 610 $aApeiron (cosmology). 610 $aAristotle. 610 $aAtomism. 610 $aCausality. 610 $aChemical element. 610 $aChemical formula. 610 $aClassical element. 610 $aCoeus. 610 $aConcept. 610 $aContradiction. 610 $aCosmogony. 610 $aCratylus. 610 $aCrius. 610 $aCronus. 610 $aDemocritus. 610 $aDiogenes of Apollonia. 610 $aDualism (philosophy of mind). 610 $aDualism. 610 $aEleatics. 610 $aEmergence. 610 $aEmpedocles. 610 $aEmpirical evidence. 610 $aEssence. 610 $aExistence. 610 $aExplanandum. 610 $aExplanation. 610 $aExplication. 610 $aFallacy. 610 $aFirst principle. 610 $aFour causes. 610 $aGreek Philosophy. 610 $aHippias. 610 $aHypothesis. 610 $aIgnoratio elenchi. 610 $aInference. 610 $aInquiry. 610 $aInstance (computer science). 610 $aIsocrates. 610 $aLeucippus. 610 $aLucretius. 610 $aMaterial monism. 610 $aMeteorology. 610 $aMonism. 610 $aMultitude. 610 $aMythology. 610 $aNatural philosophy. 610 $aNatural science. 610 $aOn Generation and Corruption. 610 $aOn the Heavens. 610 $aOntology. 610 $aOusia. 610 $aParmenides. 610 $aPeripatetic school. 610 $aPhenomenon. 610 $aPhilolaus. 610 $aPhilosopher. 610 $aPhilosophical theory. 610 $aPhilosophy. 610 $aPre-Socratic philosophy. 610 $aPremise. 610 $aPrinciple. 610 $aProcess philosophy. 610 $aProse. 610 $aPythagoreanism. 610 $aQuantity. 610 $aRarefaction. 610 $aReality. 610 $aReason. 610 $aScience. 610 $aScientific method. 610 $aScientist. 610 $aSophist. 610 $aSubstance theory. 610 $aTeleology. 610 $aTest theory. 610 $aThe Philosopher. 610 $aTheogony. 610 $aTheophrastus. 610 $aTheoretical physics. 610 $aTheory of Forms. 610 $aTheory of change. 610 $aTheory. 610 $aThomas Kuhn. 610 $aThought. 610 $aTimaeus (dialogue). 610 $aTrace Amounts. 610 $aTreatise. 610 $aUnity of opposites. 610 $aWorld view. 610 $aXenophanes. 615 0$aPhilosophy, Ancient. 615 0$aPre-Socratic philosophers. 676 $a182.1 686 $a08.21$2bcl 686 $a08.35$2bcl 700 $aGraham$b Daniel W$0172045 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910781050803321 996 $aExplaining the cosmos$93674942 997 $aUNINA
