Death in a Church of Life paints a vivid picture of how members of the Baitshepi Church make strenuous efforts to sustain loving relationships amid widespread illness and death. Over the course of long-term fieldwork, Frederick Klaits discovered Baitshepi's distinctly maternal ethos and the "spiritual" kinship embodied in the church's nurturing fellowship practice. Klaits shows that for Baitshepi members, Christian faith is a form of moral passion that counters practices of divination and witchcraft with redemptive hymn singing, prayer, and the use of therapeutic substances. An online audio annex makes available examples of the church members' preaching and song. 410 4$aThe Anthropology of Christianity 606 $aAIDS (Disease) - Patients - Pastoral counseling of - Botswana 606 $aAIDS (Disease) -- Patients -- Pastoral counseling of -- Botswana 606 $aAIDS (Disease) - Religious aspects - Christianity 606 $aAIDS (Disease) -- Religious aspects -- Christianity 606 $aChurch work with the sick - Botswana 606 $aAIDS (Disease)$xPatients$xPastoral counseling of$zBotswana 606 $aAIDS (Disease)$xChristianity$xReligious aspects$zBotswana 606 $aChurch work with the sick 606 $aAcquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome 606 $aHIV Infections 606 $aPastoral Care 606 $aReligion and Medicine 606 $aSocial Support 606 $aChristianity 606 $aReligion and Psychology 606 $aImmunologic Deficiency Syndromes 606 $aReligion 606 $aSocial Environment 606 $aLentivirus Infections 606 $aSexually Transmitted Diseases, Viral 606 $aSlow Virus Diseases 606 $aCounseling 606 $aVirus Diseases 606 $aRetroviridae Infections 606 $aSociology 606 $aHumanities 606 $aSexually Transmitted Diseases 606 $aImmune System Diseases 606 $aPsychology, Applied 606 $aRNA Virus Infections 606 $aDiseases 606 $aSocial Sciences 606 $aChristianity$2HILCC 606 $aReligion$2HILCC 606 $aPhilosophy & Religion$2HILCC 608 $aEthnography. 610 $aaids crisis. 610 $aaids. 610 $aanthropology sociology. 610 $aanthropology. 610 $aapostolic congregation. 610 $abaitshepi church. 610 $abotswana. 610 $achristian faith. 610 $achristian nonfiction. 610 $achristianity. 610 $achurch. 610 $adiscussion books. 610 $aethnographers. 610 $aethnography. 610 $afaith and religion. 610 $afellowship. 610 $afieldwork. 610 $ahiv. 610 $ahuman relationships. 610 $ahymns. 610 $aillness and death. 610 $alife and death. 610 $amodern history. 610 $amoral passion. 610 $apower of god. 610 $apower of prayer. 610 $aprayer. 610 $apreaching. 610 $aspiritual kinship. 610 $aspirituality and faith. 610 $atherapeutic substances. 615 4$aAIDS (Disease) - Patients - Pastoral counseling of - Botswana. 615 4$aAIDS (Disease) -- Patients -- Pastoral counseling of -- Botswana. 615 4$aAIDS (Disease) - Religious aspects - Christianity. 615 4$aAIDS (Disease) -- Religious aspects -- Christianity. 615 4$aChurch work with the sick - Botswana. 615 0$aAIDS (Disease)$xPatients$xPastoral counseling of 615 0$aAIDS (Disease)$xChristianity$xReligious aspects 615 0$aChurch work with the sick 615 2$aAcquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome 615 2$aHIV Infections 615 2$aPastoral Care 615 2$aReligion and Medicine 615 2$aSocial Support 615 2$aChristianity 615 2$aReligion and Psychology 615 2$aImmunologic Deficiency Syndromes 615 2$aReligion 615 2$aSocial Environment 615 2$aLentivirus Infections 615 2$aSexually Transmitted Diseases, Viral 615 2$aSlow Virus Diseases 615 2$aCounseling 615 2$aVirus Diseases 615 2$aRetroviridae Infections 615 2$aSociology 615 2$aHumanities 615 2$aSexually Transmitted Diseases 615 2$aImmune System Diseases 615 2$aPsychology, Applied 615 2$aRNA Virus Infections 615 2$aDiseases 615 2$aSocial Sciences 615 7$aChristianity 615 7$aReligion 615 7$aPhilosophy & Religion 676 $a261.8/3219697920096883 700 $aKlaits$b Frederick$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$01566388 801 0$bDE-B1597 801 1$bDE-B1597 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910780920503321 996 $aDeath in a Church of Life$93836851 997 $aUNINA
