Such monks often served as spiritual advisors to urban aristocrats whose patronage gave them considerable authority and independence from episcopal control. This book is the first comprehensive study of this type of Christian poverty and the challenge it posed for episcopal authority and the promotion of monasticism in late antiquity. Focusing on devotional practices, Daniel Caner draws together diverse testimony from Egypt, Syria, Asia Minor, and elsewhere-including the Pseudo-Clementine Letters to Virgins, Augustine's On the Work of Monks, John Chrysostom's homilies, legal codes-to reveal gospel-inspired patterns of ascetic dependency and teaching from the third to the fifth centuries. Throughout, his point of departure is social and cultural history, especially the urban social history of the late Roman empire. He also introduces many charismatic individuals whose struggle to persist against church suppression of their chosen way of imitating Christ was fought with defiant conviction, and the book includes the first annotated English translation of the biography of Alexander Akoimetos (Alexander the Sleepless). Wandering, Begging Monks allows us to understand these fascinating figures of early Christianity in the full context of late Roman society. 410 0$aTransformation of the classical heritage ;$v33. 606 $aMonastic and religious life$xHistory$yEarly church, ca. 30-600 606 $aMessalians 610 $a4th century. 610 $a5th century. 610 $aalexander akoimetos. 610 $aalexander the sleepless. 610 $aantiquity. 610 $aapostolic. 610 $aascetic. 610 $aasia minor. 610 $aaugustine. 610 $abegging. 610 $acatholic church. 610 $acatholicism. 610 $achristian poverty. 610 $achurch history. 610 $acloister. 610 $adevotions. 610 $aearly christianity. 610 $aearly church. 610 $aegypt. 610 $aepiscopal authority. 610 $agospels. 610 $ahomelessness. 610 $ahomilies. 610 $amaterial renunciation. 610 $amonasticism. 610 $amonks. 610 $aon the work of monks. 610 $apatronage. 610 $apseudo clementine letters to virgins. 610 $areligious life. 610 $areligious vows. 610 $aroman empire. 610 $asocial history. 610 $aspiritual life. 610 $asyria. 610 $avow of poverty. 615 0$aMonastic and religious life$xHistory 615 0$aMessalians. 676 $a271/.009/015 700 $aCaner$b Daniel$01020853 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910780587903321 996 $aWandering, begging monks$92416371 997 $aUNINA
