This book examines one particular kind of network - the 'knowledge network' - whose primary mandate is to create and disseminate knowledge based on multidisciplinary research that is informed by problem-solving as well as theoretical agendas. In their examination of five knowledge networks based in Canadian universities, and in most cases working closely with researchers in developing countries, the authors demonstrate the ability of networks to cross disciplinary boundaries, to blend the operational with the theoretical, and to respond to broad social processes. Operating through networks, rather than through formal, hierarchical structures, diverse communities of researchers create different kinds of knowledge and disseminate their results effectively across disciplinary, sectoral, and spatial boundaries. Analysis of networks in health, environment, urban, and educational fields suggests that old categories of 'north' and 'south' are becoming blurred, and that the new structures of knowledge creation and dissemination help to sustain collaborative research. 410 0$aInstitute of Public Administration of Canada series in public management and governance. 606 $aCommunication in community development$zCanada 606 $aCommunication in economic development$zCanada 606 $aCommunity development$xResearch$zCanada 606 $aEconomic development$xResearch$zCanada 606 $aInformation networks$zCanada$vCase studies 607 $aKanada$2swd 607 $aKanada$2gnd 607 $aOntario$zToronto$2fast 607 $aNova Scotia$zHalifax$2fast 607 $aCanada$2fast 608 $aLivres numeriques. 608 $aCase studies. 608 $ae-books. 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aCommunication in community development 615 0$aCommunication in economic development 615 0$aCommunity development$xResearch 615 0$aEconomic development$xResearch 615 0$aInformation networks 676 $a004.652 700 $aFitzgibbon$b Joy$01537942 702 $aStein$b Janice Gross 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910780560703321 996 $aNetworks of knowledge$93787576 997 $aUNINA
