By examining the life and works of a bureaucrat, Celalzade Mustafa, S?ahin argues that the empire was built as part of the Eurasian momentum of empire building and demonstrates the imperial vision of sixteenth-century Ottomans. This unique study shows that, in contrast with many Eurocentric views, the Ottomans were active players in European politics, with an imperial culture in direct competition with that of the Habsburgs and the Safavids. Indeed, this book explains Ottoman empire building with reference to the larger Eurasian context, from Tudor England to Mughal India, contextualizing such issues as state formation, imperial policy and empire building in the period more generally. S?ahin's work also devotes significant attention to the often-ignored religious dimension of the Ottoman-Safavid struggle, showing how the rivalry redefined Sunni and Shiite Islam, laying the foundations for today's religious tensions. 410 0$aCambridge studies in Islamic civilization. 517 3 $aEmpire & Power in the Reign of Su?leyman 606 $aHistorians$zTurkey$vBiography 606 $aHistoriography$zTurkey$xHistory$y16th century 606 $aImperialism$xHistory$y16th century 606 $aPower (Social sciences)$zTurkey$xHistory$y16th century 607 $aTurkey$xOfficials and employees$vBiography 607 $aTurkey$xHistory$ySu?leyman I, 1520-1566$xHistoriography 607 $aTurkey$xHistory$ySu?leyman I, 1520-1566 615 0$aHistorians 615 0$aHistoriography$xHistory 615 0$aImperialism$xHistory 615 0$aPower (Social sciences)$xHistory 676 $a956/.015 700 $aS?ahin$b Kaya$f1974-$0850549 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910462846103321 996 $aEmpire and Power in the Reign of Su?leyman$91899090 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03361nam 2200781 450 001 9910780533503321 005 20231206204459.0 010 $a1-4426-8055-5 010 $a1-282-02563-5 010 $a9786612025631 024 7 $a10.3138/9781442680555 035 $a(CKB)2430000000001219 035 $a(EBL)4672013 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000290125 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11232720 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000290125 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10403124 035 $a(PQKB)11458819 035 $a(CaPaEBR)417770 035 $a(CaBNvSL)thg00600487 035 $a(DE-B1597)464923 035 $a(OCoLC)944177501 035 $a(DE-B1597)9781442680555 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL4672013 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr11257699 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL202563 035 $a(OCoLC)958515974 035 $a(VaAlCD)20.500.12592/gv5pmk 035 $a(schport)gibson_crkn/2009-12-01/6/417770 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC4672013 035 $a(OCoLC)1390117608 035 $a(MdBmJHUP)musev2_105287 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC3251288 035 $a(EXLCZ)992430000000001219 100 $a20160922h19981998 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 14$aThe birth of a new South Africa /$fT. He begins by looking at the changes that set the stage for the demise of apartheid, and then at the challenges facing the new administration of Nelson Mandela after the May 1994 elections. The Government of National Unity had to build a new society out of old bricks, with all the handicaps of an economy run down by sanctions and with a school system that had almost collapsed and, in the process, left large numbers of people unemployed." "Davenport examines the process of reconciliation among the various elements of South African society, and explains how a host of problems that might have undermined peace-making efforts were overcome. He ends with an up-to-date analysis of the making of the new constitution, a process set against this politically volatile background."--Jacket. 410 0$aJoanne Goodman lectures ;$v1995. 606 $aApartheid 607 $aSouth Africa$xPolitics and government$y1994- 607 $aSouth Africa$xPolitics and government 608 $aLivres numeriques. 608 $ae-books. 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aApartheid. 676 $a968.06/5 700 $aDavenport$b T.
