Nancy Janovicek focuses on women's groups in small cities and rural communities, examining anti-violence activism in Thunder Bay, Kenora, Nelson, and Moncton. She also pays close attention to Aboriginal women in northwestern Ontario, where the connections between family violence and the devaluation of indigenous culture in Canadian society complicated effots to end domestic violence. This book lays bare the aims and challenges of establishing women's shelters in non-urban areas. The local histories presented here show how transition houses became hubs in a larger movement to change attitudes about domestic violence and to lobby for legislation to protect women. 606 $aWomen's shelters$zCanada$xHistory 606 $aAbused women$xServices for$zCanada$xHistory 606 $aRural women$xServices for$zCanada$xHistory 606 $aIndigenous women$xServices for$zCanada$xHistory 606 $aWomen's shelters$zCanada$vCase studies 606 $aFeminism$zCanada 606 $aWomen's rights$zCanada 606 $aMaisons d'he?bergement pour femmes$zCanada$xHistoire 606 $aFemmes victimes de violence, Services aux$zCanada$xHistoire 606 $aFemmes en milieu rural, Services aux$zCanada$xHistoire 606 $aFemmes autochtones, Services aux$zCanada$xHistoire 606 $aMaisons d'he?bergement pour femmes$zCanada$vCas, E?tudes de 606 $aFe?minisme$zCanada 606 $aFemmes$xDroits$zCanada 615 0$aWomen's shelters$xHistory. 615 0$aAbused women$xServices for$xHistory. 615 0$aRural women$xServices for$xHistory. 615 0$aIndigenous women$xServices for$xHistory. 615 0$aWomen's shelters 615 0$aFeminism 615 0$aWomen's rights 615 6$aMaisons d'he?bergement pour femmes$xHistoire. 615 6$aFemmes victimes de violence, Services aux$xHistoire. 615 6$aFemmes en milieu rural, Services aux$xHistoire. 615 6$aFemmes autochtones, Services aux$xHistoire. 615 6$aMaisons d'he?bergement pour femmes 615 6$aFe?minisme 615 6$aFemmes$xDroits 676 $a362.82/92830971 700 $aJanovic?ek$b Nancy$f1968-$01523730 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910780519703321 996 $aNo place to go$93764033 997 $aUNINA
