Sallaz goes behind the scenes of the global casino industry to investigate the radically different worlds of work and leisure he found in identically designed casinos in the United States and South Africa. Seamlessly weaving political and economic history with his own personal experience, Sallaz provides a riveting account of two years spent working among both countries' casino dealers, pit bosses, and politicians. While the popular imagination sees the Nevada casino as a hedonistic world of consumption, The Labor of Luck shows that the "Vegas experience" is made possible only through a variety of systems regulating labor, capital, and consumers, and that because of these complex dynamics, the Vegas casino cannot be seamlessly picked up and replicated elsewhere. Sallaz's fresh and path-breaking approach reveals how neo-liberal versus post-colonial forms of governance produce divergent worlds at the tables, and how politics, profits, and pleasure have come together to shape everyday life in the new economy. 606 $aCasinos$zUnited States 606 $aCasinos$zSouth Africa 610 $aafrica. 610 $aamerican casinos. 610 $abusiness and industry. 610 $abusiness. 610 $acapitalism. 610 $acasino capitalism. 610 $acasino dealers. 610 $acasino industry. 610 $acasino management. 610 $acomparative ethnography. 610 $aconsumerism. 610 $aeconomic history. 610 $aethnography. 610 $aglobal casino. 610 $agold city casino. 610 $alabor studies. 610 $alas vegas. 610 $aneoliberalism. 610 $anorth america. 610 $apit bosses. 610 $apolitical history. 610 $apostcolonialism. 610 $apower and wealth. 610 $aregulated labor. 610 $aregulations. 610 $asilver state casino. 610 $asociology. 610 $asouth africa. 610 $asouth african casinos. 610 $aunited states of america. 610 $avegas experience. 610 $awork and labor. 615 0$aCasinos 615 0$aCasinos 676 $a338.4/77950968 700 $aSallaz$b Jeffrey J.$f1974-$01545764 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910780435803321 996 $aThe labor of luck$93800852 997 $aUNINA
