Aharon Shemesh's pioneering study revives an issue long dormant in religious scholarship: namely, the relationship between rabbinic law, as written more than one hundred years after the destruction of the Second Temple, and Jewish practice during the Second Temple. The monumental discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls in Qumran led to the revelation of this missing material and the closing of a two-hundred-year gap in knowledge, allowing work to begin comparing specific laws of the Qumran sect with rabbinic laws. With the publication of scroll 4QMMT-a polemical letter by Dead Sea sectarians concerning points of Jewish law-an effective comparison was finally possible. This is the first book-length treatment of the material to appear since the publication of 4QMMT and the first attempt to apply its discoveries to the work of nineteenth-century scholars. It is also the first work on this important topic written in plain language and accessible to nonspecialists in the history of Jewish law. 410 0$aTaubman lectures in Jewish studies. 606 $aJewish law$xHistory$yTo 1500 606 $aQumran community 606 $aRabbinical literature$xHistory and criticism 606 $aJudaism$xHistory$yTo 70 A.D 610 $a19th century. 610 $a4qmmt. 610 $acomprehensive study. 610 $aconservative religion. 610 $acultural studies. 610 $adead sea scrolls. 610 $ahalakhah. 610 $ajewish history. 610 $ajewish law. 610 $ajewish practice. 610 $ajewish scholars. 610 $ajewish studies. 610 $ajudaism. 610 $alegal literature. 610 $alegal material. 610 $anonfiction. 610 $apharisaic. 610 $apolemical letter. 610 $aqumran. 610 $arabbinic judaism. 610 $arabbinic law. 610 $arabbis. 610 $areligious history. 610 $areligious law. 610 $areligious scholars. 610 $areligious scholarship. 610 $asadducees. 610 $asecond temple. 610 $asectarians. 615 0$aJewish law$xHistory 615 0$aQumran community. 615 0$aRabbinical literature$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aJudaism$xHistory 676 $a296.1/80902 686 $a11.21$2bcl 700 $aShemesh$b Aharon$01535742 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910780435203321 996 $aHalakhah in the making$93800846 997 $aUNINA
