Barbara R. Stein presents a luminous portrait of this remarkable woman, a pioneer who helped shape the world of science in California, yet whose name has been little known until now. Alexander's father founded a Hawaiian sugar empire, and his great wealth afforded his adventurous daughter the opportunity to pursue her many interests. Stein portrays Alexander as a complex, intelligent, woman who--despite her frail appearance--was determined to achieve something with her life. Along with Louise Kellogg, her partner of forty years, Alexander collected thousands of animal, plant, and fossil specimens throughout western North America. Their collections serve as an invaluable record of the flora and fauna that were beginning to disappear as the West succumbed to spiraling population growth, urbanization, and agricultural development. Today at least seventeen taxa are named for Alexander, and several others honor Kellogg, who continued to make field trips after Alexander's death. Alexander's dealings with scientists and her encouragement--and funding--of women to do field research earned her much admiration, even from those with whom she clashed. Stein's extensive use of archival material, including excerpts from correspondence and diaries, allows us to see Annie Alexander as a keen observer of human nature who loved women and believed in their capabilities. Her legacy endures in the fields of zoology and paleontology and also in the lives of women who seek to follow their own star to the fullest degree possible. 606 $aZoologists$zUnited States$vBiography 610 $aadventure. 610 $aamerican west. 610 $aannie montague alexander. 610 $aberkeley. 610 $abiography. 610 $acalifornia. 610 $aconservation. 610 $aenvironment. 610 $aexplorer. 610 $aextinction. 610 $afemale scientists. 610 $afeminism. 610 $afield research. 610 $afossils. 610 $agender. 610 $ahawaii. 610 $ahistorical women. 610 $ahistory. 610 $alesbian. 610 $algbt. 610 $algbtqia. 610 $alouise kellogg. 610 $amarkswoman. 610 $anatural history museum. 610 $anaturalist. 610 $anonfiction. 610 $aold west. 610 $apaleontology. 610 $aphilanthropist. 610 $apioneer. 610 $aradical women. 610 $asugar empire. 610 $athe west. 610 $atravel. 610 $aurbanization. 610 $awomen and science. 610 $awomen in history. 610 $awomen in science. 610 $awomen in stem. 610 $awomens studies. 610 $azoology. 615 0$aZoologists 676 $a570/.92 676 $aB 700 $aStein$b Barbara R.$f1955-$01558087 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910780375603321 996 $aOn her own terms$93822207 997 $aUNINA
