That patriotism-shaped by Reformation Protestantism and imbued with the American Puritan belief in a providential "errand"-has evolved over 350 years and influenced American political culture in both positive and negative ways, McKenna shows. The germ of the patriotism, an activist theology that stressed collective rather than individual salvation, began in the late 1630's in New England and traveled across the continent, eventually becoming a national phenomenon. Today, American patriotism still reflects its origins in the seventeenth century. By encouraging cohesion in a nation of diverse peoples and inspiring social reform, American patriotism has sometimes been a force for good. But the book also uncovers a darker side of the nation's patriotism-a prejudice against the South in the nineteenth century, for example, and a tendency toward nativism and anti-Catholicism. Ironically, a great reversal has occurred, and today the most fervent believers in the Puritan narrative are the former "outsiders"-Catholics and Southerners. McKenna offers an interesting new perspective on patriotism's role throughout American history, and he concludes with trenchant thoughts on its role in the post-9/11 era. 606 $aPatriotism$zUnited States$xHistory 606 $aPuritans$zUnited States$xDoctrines$xHistory 606 $aPuritans$zUnited States$xHistory 606 $aReformed Church$zUnited States$xDoctrines$xHistory 606 $aReligion and politics$zUnited States 606 $aNational characteristics, American 607 $aUnited States$xHistory$xReligious aspects$xChristianity 607 $aUnited States$xCivilization$xPhilosophy 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aPatriotism$xHistory. 615 0$aPuritans$xDoctrines$xHistory. 615 0$aPuritans$xHistory. 615 0$aReformed Church$xDoctrines$xHistory. 615 0$aReligion and politics 615 0$aNational characteristics, American. 676 $a973 700 $aMcKenna$b George$0473422 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910451947703321 996 $aPuritan origins of American patriotism$9226829 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02996nam 22006014a 450 001 9910780227103321 005 20230617025006.0 010 $a1-281-77028-0 010 $a9786611770280 010 $a0-8144-2779-0 035 $a(CKB)111087027964262 035 $a(EBL)243028 035 $a(OCoLC)475962503 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000157925 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11149266 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000157925 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10144394 035 $a(PQKB)11552995 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC243028 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL243028 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10052839 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL177028 035 $a(OCoLC)935902670 035 $a(EXLCZ)99111087027964262 100 $a20030604d2004 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurcn||||||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aFranchising & licensing$b[electronic resource] $etwo powerful ways to grow your business in any economy /$fAndrew J.
