The three surviving Hebrew accounts of the crusaders' devastating assaults on Rhineland Jewish communities during the spring of 1096 have been examined at length, but only now can we appreciate the extent to which they represent their turbulent times. After a close analysis of the texts themselves, Chazan addresses the objectives of the three narratives. He compares these accounts with earlier Jewish history writing and with contemporary crusade historiography. It is in their disjuncture with past forms of Jewish historical narration and their amazing parallels with Latin crusade narratives that the Hebrew narratives are most revealing. We see how they reflect the embeddedness of early Ashkenazic Jewry in the vibrant atmosphere of late-eleventh- and early-twelfth-century northern Europe. 606 $aJews$zGermany$xHistory$y1096-1147$vSources 606 $aJews$xPersecutions$zGermany$xHistory$vSources 606 $aJewish martyrs$zGermany$xBiography$vSources 606 $aCrusades$yFirst, 1096-1099$vSources 607 $aGermany$xEthnic relations$vSources 610 $a1096. 610 $a11th century. 610 $a12th century. 610 $aacculturation. 610 $aanti jewish violence. 610 $aantisemitism. 610 $aashkenazic jewry. 610 $aassimilation. 610 $abelonging. 610 $acrusade. 610 $acrusaders. 610 $adiscrimination. 610 $aeurope. 610 $aexile. 610 $afirst crusade. 610 $agenocide. 610 $agentiles. 610 $ahebrew. 610 $ahistory. 610 $ajewish communities. 610 $ajewish history. 610 $ajewish lives. 610 $ajewish people. 610 $ajewish. 610 $ajudaica. 610 $ajudaism. 610 $amartyrs. 610 $amedieval. 610 $anorthern europe. 610 $aprejudice. 610 $aracism. 610 $areligion. 610 $areligious difference. 610 $areligious persecution. 610 $arhineland jews. 615 0$aJews$xHistory 615 0$aJews$xPersecutions$xHistory 615 0$aJewish martyrs$xBiography 615 0$aCrusades 676 $a943/.004924 700 $aChazan$b Robert$0777633 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910780081603321 996 $aGod, humanity, and history$93776000 997 $aUNINA
