This musical subculture came to the United States with the late-nineteenth-century Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe. Although it had declined in popularity by the middle of the twentieth century, this lively music is now enjoying recognition among music fans of all stripes. Today, klezmer flourishes in the United States and abroad in the world music and accompany Jewish celebrations. The outstanding essays collected in this volume investigate American klezmer: its roots, its evolution, and its spirited revitalization. The contributors to American Klezmer include every kind of authority on the subject--from academics to leading musicians--and they offer a wide range of perspectives on the musical, social, and cultural history of klezmer in American life. The first half of this volume concentrates on the early history of klezmer, using folkloric sources, records of early musicians unions, and interviews with the last of the immigrant musicians. The second part of the collection examines the klezmer "revival" that began in the 1970's. Several of these essays were written by the leaders of this movement, or draw on interviews with them, and give firsthand accounts of how klezmer is transmitted and how its practitioners maintain a balance between preservation and innovation. 606 $aKlezmer music$vCongresses 606 $aJews$vMusic$vCongresses 610 $aamerican history. 610 $acultural history. 610 $acultural studies. 610 $adance music. 610 $afolk music. 610 $afolk musicians. 610 $ahasidic jews. 610 $ahasidism. 610 $ajewish history. 610 $ajewish language. 610 $ajewish studies. 610 $ajewish youth. 610 $ajews. 610 $ajudaism. 610 $aklezmer union. 610 $aklezmer. 610 $amusic genres. 610 $aphiladelphia. 610 $areligion. 610 $areligious studies. 610 $asocial history. 610 $asocial studies. 610 $aunited states history. 610 $aus history. 610 $ayiddish. 615 0$aKlezmer music 615 0$aJews 676 $a781.62/924 701 $aSlobin$b Mark$0637610 712 12$aKlezmer Research Conference$d(1st :$f1996 :$eWesleyan University) 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910780078303321 996 $aAmerican Klezmer$93755368 997 $aUNINA
