Living with risk -- pt. 2. The realm of insurance -- pt. 3. Scientific challenges. 330 $aMuch has been written about the ups and downs of financial markets, from the lure of prosperity to the despair of crises. Yet a more fundamental and pernicious source of uncertainty exists in today's world: the traditional "insurance" risks of earthquakes, storms, terrorist attacks, and other disasters. Insightfully exploring these "acts of God and man," Michael R. Powers guides readers through the methods available for identifying and measuring such risks, financing their consequences, and forecasting their future behavior within the limits of science.A distinctive characteristic of earthquakes, hurricanes, bombings, and other insurance risks is that they impact the values of stocks, bonds, commodities, and other market-based financial products, while remaining largely unaffected by or "aloof" from the behavior of markets. Quantifying such risks given limited data is difficult yet crucial for achieving the financing objectives of insurance. Powers begins with a discussion of how risk impacts our lives, health, and possessions and proceeds to introduce the statistical techniques necessary for analyzing these uncertainties. He then considers the experience of risk from the perspectives of both policyholders and insurance companies, and compares their respective responses. The risks inherent in the private insurance industry lead naturally to a discussion of the government's role as both market regulator and potential "insurer of last resort." Following a thoughtful and balanced analysis of these issues, Powers concludes with an interdisciplinary investigation into the nature of uncertainty, incorporating ideas from physics, philosophy, and game theory to assess science's limitations in predicting the ramifications of risk. 606 $aRisk (Insurance) 606 $aRisk management 615 0$aRisk (Insurance) 615 0$aRisk management. 676 $a368 700 $aPowers$b Michael R$0278387 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910789323703321 996 $aActs of god and man$93752212 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02100oam 22006615 450 001 9910780022603321 005 20200520144314.0 010 $a1-280-08768-4 010 $a9786610087686 010 $a0-585-41219-7 024 7 $a10.1596/0-8213-5039-0 035 $a(CKB)111056486748532 035 $a(OCoLC)232161875 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebrary5007778 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000085194 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11112738 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000085194 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10005993 035 $a(PQKB)10140702 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC3050494 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL3050494 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr5007778 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL8768 035 $a(OCoLC)50322349 035 $a(The World Bank)2001046928 035 $a(US-djbf)12561526 035 $a(EXLCZ)99111056486748532 100 $a20011011d2001 uf 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurcn||||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aAccounting for poverty in infrastructure reform : $elearning from Latin America's experience /$fAntonio Estache, Vivien Foster, Quentin Wodon 210 1$aWashington, D.C. :$cWorld Bank,$d2001. 215 $avii, 122 pages $cillustrations ;$d24 cm 225 0 $aWBI development studies 300 $aBibliographic Level Mode of Issuance: Monograph 311 $a0-8213-5039-0 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references (p. 111-116) and index. 410 0$aWorld Bank e-Library. 606 $aPublic utilities$zLatin America 606 $aPoverty$zLatin America 606 $aPrivatization$zLatin America 615 0$aPublic utilities 615 0$aPoverty 615 0$aPrivatization 676 $a363/.098 700 $aEstache$b Antonio$01505822 701 $aFoster$b Vivien$f1968-$0145543 701 $aWodon$b Quentin$01104883 801 0$bDLC 801 1$bDLC 801 2$bDLC 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910780022603321 996 $aAccounting for poverty in infrastructure reform$93790760 997 $aUNINA LEADER 04916nam 22006615 450 001 9910728949003321 005 20230602212749.0 010 $a9783031248085 010 $a3031248082 024 7 $a10.1007/978-3-031-24808-5 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC30564784 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL30564784 035 $a(OCoLC)1381712092 035 $a(DE-He213)978-3-031-24808-5 035 $a(BIP)086624553 035 $a(CKB)26821648000041 035 $a(EXLCZ)9926821648000041 100 $a20230602d2023 u| 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurcnu|||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aAsylum and Belonging through Collective Playwriting $e"How much home does a person need?" /$fby Helene Grøn 205 $a1st ed. 2023. 210 1$aCham :$cSpringer International Publishing :$cImprint: Palgrave Macmillan,$d2023. 215 $a1 online resource (267 pages) 311 08$aPrint version: Grøn, Helene Asylum and Belonging Through Collective Playwriting Cham : Springer International Publishing AG,c2023 9783031248078 327 $aChapter 1:Introduction: ?How Much Home Does a Person Need?? -- Chapter 2: Ontologies of Belonging: Philosophical, Historical and Narratological Considerations -- Chapter 3: Dramaturgical Ethics: Undoing and Decreating -- Chapter 4: Ethnoplaywriting: Creating Belonging -- Chapter 5: Rebooting the Social Contract: Trampoline House and Deportation Centre Sjælsmark -- Chapter 6: Fieldwork Reflection: ?Not just theatre, also politics, law??Making Theatre in Deportation Centre Sjælsmark -- Chapter 7: ?You are enough, you belong with us?: Reimagining Sisterhood as Collective Belonging -- Chapter 8: Fieldwork Reflection: The Sistas and Amazing Amelia -- Chapter 9: Conclusion: ?Much Home?. 330 $a?This book is an intellectual trampoline. It makes you bounce, turn somersaults, back flips and then drop to your knees. It?s the opposite of a rollercoaster. It helps you see above, beyond, behind and beneath. Serious exercise for mind, body and spirit, stretching concepts of home and belonging like elastic so show all the many powerful and extraordinary ways those who have to re-home themselves or make home with strangers open up new horizons for us all, giving us a glimpse of life over the fence.? ? Alison Phipps, Professor of Languages and Intercultural Studies UNESCO Chair in Refugee Integration through Languages and the Arts, University of Glasgow This book explores the notion of home in the wake of the so-called refugee crisis, and asks how home and belonging can be rethought through the act of creative practices and collective writing with refugees and asylum seekers. Where Giorgio Agamben calls the refugee ?the figure of our time?, this study places the question of home among those who experience its ruptures. Veering away from treating the refugee as a conceptual figure, the lived experiences and creative expressions of seeking asylum in Denmark and the United Kingdom are explored instead. The study produces a theoretical framework around home by drawing from a cross-disciplinary field of existential and political philosophy, narratology, performance studies and anthropology. Moreover, it argues that theatre studies is uniquely positioned to understand the performative and storied aspects of seeking asylum and the compromises of belonging made through the asylum process. Helene Grøn holds a PhD in Theatre Studies from the University of Glasgow and Glasgow Refugee, Asylum and Migration Network, and is currently a Postdoc at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark.
