John Ahlquist and Margaret Levi document eighty years of such activism by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union in the United States and the Waterside Workers Federation in Australia. They systematically compare the ILWU and WWF to the Teamsters and the International Longshoremen's Association, two American transport industry labor unions that actively discouraged the pursuit of political causes unrelated to their own economic interests. Drawing on a wealth of original data, Ahlquist and Levi show how activist organizations can profoundly transform the views of members about their political efficacy and the collective actions they are willing to contemplate. They find that leaders who ask for support of projects without obvious material benefits must first demonstrate their ability to deliver the goods and services members expect. These leaders must also build governance institutions that coordinate expectations about their objectives and the behavior of members. In the Interest of Others reveals how activist labor unions expand the community of fate and provoke preferences that transcend the private interests of individual members. Ahlquist and Levi then extend this logic to other membership organizations, including religious groups, political parties, and the state itself. 606 $aLabor unions$xPolitical activity 606 $aLabor movement 610 $aILWU leaders. 610 $aILWU members. 610 $aInternational Brotherhood of Teamsters. 610 $aInternational Longshore and Warehouse Union. 610 $aInternational Longshoremen's Association. 610 $aMaritime Union of Australia. 610 $aWaterside Workers' Federation. 610 $aactivist unions. 610 $aaggregate behavior. 610 $aaltruism. 610 $abusiness unions. 610 $acooperation. 610 $aeconomic opportunities. 610 $aeconomism. 610 $aequilibrium selection. 610 $aethnic divisions. 610 $agovernance arrangements. 610 $agovernance equilibrium. 610 $agovernance. 610 $aill-formed beliefs. 610 $aindividual members. 610 $aindustrial efficacy. 610 $ainformation acquisition. 610 $ainternal heterogeneity. 610 $ainternational trade. 610 $alabor organization. 610 $alabor unions. 610 $aleadership rents. 610 $amembers. 610 $amembership organizations. 610 $anational-level organizations. 610 $anationalist groups. 610 $aorganization governance. 610 $aorganizational governance. 610 $aorganizational leaders. 610 $aorganizational leadership. 610 $aorganizational norms. 610 $apolitical activism. 610 $apolitical beliefs. 610 $apolitical causes. 610 $apolitical commitments. 610 $apolitical mobilization. 610 $apolitical opinions. 610 $areligious divisions. 610 $aselective incentives. 610 $aself-selection. 610 $asocial justice. 610 $asocial networks. 610 $asolidarity. 610 $astate-building. 610 $atrade liberalization. 610 $atrade restrictions. 610 $aunion activities. 610 $aunion activity. 610 $aunion leaders. 610 $aunion. 610 $aunions. 610 $avolunteering. 615 0$aLabor unions$xPolitical activity. 615 0$aLabor movement. 676 $a322/.2 700 $aAhlquist$b John S$01572315 701 $aLevi$b Margaret$0124740 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910779705603321 996 $aIn the interest of others$93847142 997 $aUNINA
