He was regarded as an admirer of Hitler and Mussolini, and a staunch isolationist who believed that minimizing American contact with the rest of the world was the only sure way to achieve security. Using all the journalistic apparatus at his disposal, Hearst trumpeted his views about the conduct of other nations and peoples and, more particularly, about the conduct of his own country in relation to them. The Spanish-American War of 1898 was often described as "Mr Hearst's war" because of the role he apparently played in pushing the United States into it. Mugridge investigates Hearst's journalistic tactics, which seldom varied, and concludes that ultimately Hearst's flamboyant style militated against his being taken seriously by those responsible for the nation's affairs. Exploring the personal side of this very public figure, Mugridge argues that Hearst was a far more complex individual than previous biographers have assumed. He probes beneath Hearst's largely self-created image to delineate the aspirations, anxieties, and vanities that led Hearst to embrace and advance his positions on U.S. foreign relations. 606 $aPublishers and publishing$zUnited States$vBiography 606 $aPress and politics$zUnited States$xHistory$y20th century 615 0$aPublishers and publishing 615 0$aPress and politics$xHistory 676 $a070.5/092 700 $aMugridge$b Ian$01566143 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910782623103321 996 $aThe view from Xanadu$93836496 997 $aUNINA LEADER 04774oas 2201621 a 450 001 9910222248303321 005 20260127110448.0 011 $a1878-6847 035 $a(DE-599)ZDB2011536-2 035 $a(OCoLC)41204938 035 $a(CONSER) 2008233968 035 $a(CKB)963017575080 035 $a(DE-599)2011536-2 035 $a(EXLCZ)99963017575080 100 $a19990419a19909999 sy 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurmn||||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 14$aThe International journal of risk & safety in medicine 210 $aAmsterdam $cElsevier Science Publishers B.V 210 31$a[Thousand Oaks, CA] :$cSAGE Publications 300 $aRefereed/Peer-reviewed 311 08$a0924-6479 517 3 $aRisk & safety in medicine 517 3 $aInternational journal of risk and safety in medicine 517 3 $aRisk and safety in medicine 606 $aHealth risk assessment$vPeriodicals 606 $aRisk management$vPeriodicals 606 $aQuality assurance$vPeriodicals 606 $aDecision making 606 $aMedical care$xQuality control 606 $aRisk management 606 $aTherapeutics$xComplications 606 $aHealth risk assessment 606 $aQuality assurance 606 $aDecision Making 606 $aJurisprudence 606 $aQuality Assurance, Health Care 606 $aRisk Management 606 $aTherapeutics$xadverse effects 606 $aHealth Status Indicators 606 $aRisques pour la sante?$xE?valuation 606 $aGestion du risque 606 $aAssurance qualite? 606 $aRisques pour la sante?$xE?valuation$vPe?riodiques 606 $aGestion du risque$vPe?riodiques 606 $aAssurance qualite?$vPe?riodiques 606 $aPrise de de?cision 606 $aSoins me?dicaux$xQualite?$xContro?le 606 $aThe?rapeutique$xComplications et se?quelles 606 $adecision making$2aat 606 $arisk management$2aat 606 $aTherapeutics$xComplications$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01149695 606 $aMedical care$xQuality control$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01013833 606 $aDecision making$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00889035 606 $aHealth risk assessment$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00953250 606 $aQuality assurance$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01084943 606 $aRisk management$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01098164 608 $aPeriodical. 608 $aPeriodicals.$2fast 615 0$aHealth risk assessment 615 0$aRisk management 615 0$aQuality assurance 615 0$aDecision making. 615 0$aMedical care$xQuality control. 615 0$aRisk management. 615 0$aTherapeutics$xComplications. 615 0$aHealth risk assessment. 615 0$aQuality assurance. 615 2$aDecision Making. 615 2$aJurisprudence. 615 2$aQuality Assurance, Health Care. 615 2$aRisk Management. 615 2$aTherapeutics$xadverse effects. 615 2$aHealth Status Indicators. 615 6$aRisques pour la sante?$xE?valuation. 615 6$aGestion du risque. 615 6$aAssurance qualite?. 615 6$aRisques pour la sante?$xE?valuation 615 6$aGestion du risque 615 6$aAssurance qualite? 615 6$aPrise de de?cision. 615 6$aSoins me?dicaux$xQualite?$xContro?le. 615 6$aThe?rapeutique$xComplications et se?quelles. 615 7$adecision making. 615 7$arisk management. 615 7$aTherapeutics$xComplications. 615 7$aMedical care$xQuality control. 615 7$aDecision making. 615 7$aHealth risk assessment. 615 7$aQuality assurance. 615 7$aRisk management. 676 $a362.1068 801 0$bOH1 801 1$bOH1 801 2$bOCL 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bOCLCS 801 2$bGUA 801 2$bMUQ 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bOCLCF 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bWT2 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bAU@ 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bWYU 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bOCLCA 801 2$bVT2 801 2$bLEAUB 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bCNMTR 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bOCLCA 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bOCLCA 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bOCL 801 2$bUAB 801 2$bNLM 801 2$bOCLCL 801 2$bOCLCQ 906 $aJOURNAL 912 $a9910222248303321 996 $aThe International journal of risk & safety in medicine$91951434 997 $aUNINA
