This paper attempts to combine these strands by dividing inflation into food and nonfood inflation and assessing whether food inflation affects income inequality differently from nonfood inflation. In an international sample and a sample of Chinese provinces, nonfood inflation exacerbates income inequality while the role of food inflation is more mixed. In a sample of Indian states broken down into urban and rural areas, we find that nonfood inflation adds to income inequality in both areas, while food inflation has a neutral to positive effect on income inequality in rural areas, providing support for the theory that rural wages may respond elastically to food prices. 410 0$aIMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;$vNo. 2012/147 606 $aFood prices 606 $aIncome distribution 606 $aInflation (Finance) 606 $aInflation$2imf 606 $aMacroeconomics$2imf 606 $aPrice Level$2imf 606 $aDeflation$2imf 606 $aPersonal Income, Wealth, and Their Distributions$2imf 606 $aUrban, Rural, and Regional Economics: General$2imf 606 $aAggregate Factor Income Distribution$2imf 606 $aAgriculture: Aggregate Supply and Demand Analysis$2imf 606 $aPrices$2imf 606 $aIncome inequality$2imf 606 $aIncome distribution$2imf 606 $aFood prices$2imf 606 $aPersonal income$2imf 606 $aNational accounts$2imf 606 $aIncome$2imf 607 $aIndia$2imf 615 0$aFood prices. 615 0$aIncome distribution. 615 0$aInflation (Finance) 615 7$aInflation 615 7$aMacroeconomics 615 7$aPrice Level 615 7$aDeflation 615 7$aPersonal Income, Wealth, and Their Distributions 615 7$aUrban, Rural, and Regional Economics: General 615 7$aAggregate Factor Income Distribution 615 7$aAgriculture: Aggregate Supply and Demand Analysis 615 7$aPrices 615 7$aIncome inequality 615 7$aIncome distribution 615 7$aFood prices 615 7$aPersonal income 615 7$aNational accounts 615 7$aIncome 700 $aWalsh$b James$01481165 701 $aYu$b Jiangyan$01481166 801 0$bDcWaIMF 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910779501003321 996 $aInflation and Income Inequality$93698044 997 $aUNINA
