While a majority of the research on the colonial diaspora focuses on the Caribbean and Brazil, analysis of the regions of Mexico and the Andes open up new questions of community formation that incorporated Spanish legal strategies in secular and ecclesiastical institutions as well as articulations of multiple African identities. Therefore, it is critically important to expand the lens of the Diaspora framework that has come to shape so much of the recent scholarship on Africans in the Americas. Comprised of nine original essays, this volume is organized into three sections. Starting with voluntary and forced migrations across the Atlantic, Part I explores four distinct cases of identity construction that intersect with ongoing debates in African Diaspora scholarship regarding the models of continuity and creolization in the Americas. Part II interrogates how enslaved and free people employed their rights as Catholics to present themselves as civilized subjects, loyal Christians, and resisters to slavery. Part III asks how free people of color claimed categories of inclusion based on a identities of professional medical practitioners of "white" in transformative moments of the late colonial period"--$cProvided by publisher. 410 0$aNew Black studies. 606 $aBlack people$zLatin America$xHistory 606 $aBlack people$xRace identity$zLatin America$xHistory 606 $aSlavery$zLatin America$xHistory 606 $aSlavery and the church$xCatholic Church 606 $aSlavery and the church$zLatin America 606 $aAfrican diaspora 607 $aLatin America$xHistory$yTo 1830 615 0$aBlack people$xHistory. 615 0$aBlack people$xRace identity$xHistory. 615 0$aSlavery$xHistory. 615 0$aSlavery and the church$xCatholic Church. 615 0$aSlavery and the church 615 0$aAfrican diaspora. 676 $a305.80098 686 $aSOC056000$aHIS038000$aSOC002010$2bisacsh 701 $aBryant$b Sherwin K$01472525 701 $aO'Toole$b Rachel Sarah$01472526 701 $aVinson$b Ben$cIII.$01472527 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910779463703321 996 $aAfricans to Spanish America$93685354 997 $aUNINA
